While on my way through the most difficult airport (Vancouver BC) in secondary (read: terrorsit) inspection the lass with the badge noted my kilt folded on top of my luggage and asked if I was going to Doolin's for kilt night.
I replied to the affirmative and that was that, I was on my way.

I travel with the Scotland Tartan army to soccer matches, always amazes me the look on the security guys faces in foreign cities when they see a mob of kilted foot soldiers coming thru security

I wore a twill casual kilt when flying from California back to Alaska last summer. No issues with the kilt at all. The only issue was the TSA guy taking my smallpipe case and wanting to mess around with it with me not present. I don't go for that. Replacement value of what's in there is in the neighborhood of a thousand bucks! So, he threatened to call the police because I was being obstructive. I told him I was not, I just required him to wait until I was present. So, he claimed he could have me arrested for my attitude. Since his supervisor was no better, I assume that San Francisco just isn't a friendly airport. I'll avoid flying through there if I have a choice in the future.
Otherwise, no troubles. All my junk was in my fanny pack and I just sent that through the x-ray.

I've flown kilted once. I removed the kilt pin since I expected there could be a problem with that. That went in my checked luggage. One young TSA agent in San Diego asked if I could take off the buckles. I told him he really didn't want me to try. So it was the lunge procedure described earlier. Takes an extra 5 minutes or so as long as your carry on checks out ok.
It was quite comfortable.
None of my seat mates said anything, but one guy caught up to me in Atlanta to inform me that you don't see many kilted people in Atlanta. I told him I found that odd, since it seemed like the perfect weather for a kilt.
I was wearing a SWK Black Watch kilt. It was warm enough (and I too often tend to feel the cold easily). All-in-all, a pleasant experience.

Even knowing that there are many kilts in the Atlanta area, there must not be too many frequent kilt wearers in Atlanta, as I almost never see them outside of Scottish events. I've only run into one randomly kilted guy in my life, in fact.

Just flew from Phoenix to Vegas and back. The kilt pins where the items that caused a delay, and the buckles beeped the wand too. All the security people were nice, I had my PC so I got to talk bagpipes too. Gave one of the Gents the XMarts website as he's wanting to get a kilt before he goes to Scotland. Anyone know any kilt pins being made of non-metal? I could put that on a Thrifty-Kilt and be "no beep".

Flown Sydney -> Seoul -> JFK kilted. 'Twas a Neokilt, no kilt-pin, fanny pack repurposed as a sporran. The only issue was the belt buckle set off the metal detector going through transit in Incheon. :-/ But the Korean security person was not fazed in the least by a kilt.
Got a nice comment, though, from the customs inspector doing crowd/queue control at JFK.

Hi all thanks for your advice. I had no trouble passing through security in the airport. I took off my sporran belt and garters. However I was asked if I had anything in my pockets What pockets??

Try wearing an underwire bra...... While it doesn't generally set off the metal detectors, if you're wearing something that does and need to get the pat-down...
