Perhaps, he might have a bank that can provide a new card quickly, perhaps even has local branches. May not help much, but he might be able to get a temp card from a local branch if possible. I would like to think that if I were in such a situation, I would still be able to get money from HSBC, I doubt I would be so lucky though.

That's a big vacation bummer! Glad you're not hurt. I've heard the pick pockets in Spain are notorious for hitting tourist.

Kilt plundered
These pick pockets can be very bold and quick. Even in the best of circumstance it can be a real aggravation getting everything straightened out. My sympathies.
