I know we mere mortals cannot edit typos in titles, but the idea of small, edible sea snails crawling around on Alan H's kilt just creeps me out

I wasn't even going to mention it, for me it had a different connotation .

Being that this thread is about neither snails nor.... err ... ...well ....other things

I have fixed the title per the request of the Flame-Haired Celtic Amazon Goddess and to spare my friend Alan H. further embarrassment.

    Cheers

18 oz..... if only they would raise my credit limit on my card..... though call between that and the USAK American Heritage. 18 oz though.... I'd love something that heavy, and my wife loves leather...

Right after I hit post, something clicked with me.

2.25 oz / ft² with 9 ft² to the yard, 2.25 oz x 9 would yield just over 20 oz per square yard, or in reverse, 18oz would just be 2 oz/ft²

Even the low number is enough to make me salivate like Pavlov's Dog. But where does the actual number lay? 20.25 Oz makes me even more intrigued.

Thanks for fixing it. I can now contemplate things other than Wee Willy.

I was rounding down. Depending where one puts the calipers on the hide you will get slightly different readings so it is averaged out to a certain weight.
The best results I've had is in the 2-2.25 range. Good quality motorcycle chaps are in the 3 -4 oz range. That I find too heavy unless you are doing very wide pleats and only 3-4 running yards for the kilt. Likewise too thin under the 1.95 oz the leather stretches and doesn't hold the body. The type of hide, meaning cowhide or lambskin, deerskin also has a major role in how the kilt hangs and swishes.

I can accept that answer. (meaning my math/science mind can be at ease with rounding and natural material not being always consistent.)
