Yes they are. That is why I will never join one. I'm a bad conformist...

The Drum Major screwed up. And it's my guess, given the suspension that led to his resignation, that this might not be the first time.
Before burning your Cleveland FD t-shirts, ask yourself this simple question: When leading his pipe band in a parade, should any Drum Major wave to a member of the crowd? Don't try to come up with some sort of "special circumstances" parsing, just answer yes or no.

I am still incredulous that this is news at all.
Internal bickering within a pipeband is about as interesting as watching concrete harden.

I saw the clip.. Bottom line, it didn't warrant a suspension. I agree with what has been stated before, we're just seeing the straw that broke the camel's back, not the REAL reason(s) that the DM is no longer attached to that band.

I was watching the live televising of the parade & when I saw the guy nod toward his new president. I thought, "Supposing everyone got to wink or nod or in some way got the attention of the president?" Doubtless, that would be highly unlikely. Even so, it was a most unique instant in parading trivia & will probably be totally forgotten, (save for XMARKS) in a short time!

Courtesy trumps discipline -- too tight-[censored] discipline.
If the President appeared to be watching me, I would without hesitation acknowledge him.

"...A member of the crowd?"
That particular member of the crowd, yes.
Who's parade is it?

Well heck, I wouldn't even play for Obama or any other U.S. president anyway, so I have no care on this matter whatsoever.

You've parsed your answer.

So you wouldn't wave at just anybody... does that mean (as it did in the instance of the inaugural parade) that if you were told not to acknowledge someone while marching you'd ignore the instructions and do it anyway?
As to "Who's parade is it?", it is the organizer's parade, and participants are expected to abide by the organizer's rules.

I think the whole thing is ridiculous; he nodded a respectful greeting when meeting the eyes of the new President. I find no fault in that whatsoever.
