That's a lot of work! I think the hand sewn buttonholes hold their shape forever too. The Wizard of BC was talking about that a while back.
I guess someone could get quick at making those stitches, though. I sew so extremely sloly that I burn out after making one buttonhole...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

There's a beautifully illustrated tutorial on handworked-buttonholes in the most recent issue of Threads. Although the buttonhole in the article is intended for a couture garment and worked with silk, the technique is exactly the same for any garment.
I tried to find a link to this issue on their website with no luck, but it's still on newstands.
