Your friend was right. A lot of people like wearing 'em straight out to the side, just enough to make it a fashion trend. So if you choose to wear them on the side, you won't be arrested by the kilt police. Probably not even ticketed.

Hello WARPIPER,
I wear them the same as you. That's exactly how I was taught. With that being said/written, slightly forward.

I usually wear mine more to the side, conscious of the other style enough that they sometimes drift forward before I'm finished with them. I figure that the reason they might be worn more forward is that if you are standing at attention with your feet (technically one's legs) turned out in that neat, stable V, they end up on the sides.
Otherwise, they'd end up behind you, and that would look silly.
Just a theory,

I wear mine slightly forward. When I go out hiking in some of the scrub brush and scrub oak we have out here my flashes at times get caught if worn slightly forward. So when hiking, I wear them more to the side. As a side note and question: Are garter ties and flashes one in the same? Technically, they both perform the same function. Right?

10 and 2 is the result of the above directions. Works for me. On the right leg the sgian dubh should be a finger width beyond the flash. From marching in a band 40 years ago...
