If done right, you can tuck the excess material in such a way that you can easily store stuff in the folds.

I'd say with a traditional kilt wear a sporran, I've seen it without and it always makes it look like a skirt. So for me anyway a sporran is a must, even more important is the fact that I do need a place to put my stuff.

To further Phil's statement - sporran optional on contemporary kilt with pockets. This is about the only time I forgo the sporran, though i'd much prefer to wear one:

Another camo kilt with sporran, both kilt have front slash pockets. Hope it'll help you answer your question.

I don't wear a kilt without a sporran. Don't like the look, feel, or the lack of a place to stick some money, ID, iPhone, etc.
Maybe if I had a UK, but I don't like the look of the UK too much, perhaps because of the lack of a sporran.

I usually don't wear a sporran at home but always when out unless it's a kilt with cargo pockets like my Union Kilts leather or Indie Denim ones.

Sporran everyday? Non!
I like the look of a kilt + sporran, but am also happy with kilt sans sporran. As for me, I can't abide having the thing bouncing up and down on my tum (or wherever) as I walk. I've tried putting it on my hip for walking, but that is not comfy either. Almost always I use a small leather belt purse for money and cards, and my mobile clipped to my belt. Easy, comfortable and practical. Oh, and the handkerchief? - just pushed up the sleeve of my jumper.

I have noticed a lot of people wear kilts without sporrans at Irish festivals here in this part of the US...
Irish Highland pipers generally don't wear sporrans, and they're virtually the only folks in Ireland who wear kilts.
I must say I was puzzled by a couple of guys at one Irish festival wearing great kilts ...
Yeah; me too

Not necessarily; you can squirrel away an amazing amount of stuff in a properly pleated great kilt, and for all the times the wife's filled my sporran with her lipstick and the likes, I wouldn't mind returning the favor some time (except for the car keys. Wouldn't want her to get pissed off and drive away and leave me somewhere).

Absolutely wrong by not wearing a sporran with the traditional kilt.

Disclaimer - This is personal opinion. Tartan kilts should always be worn with a sporran unless engaged in some activity that it gets in the way (Highland heavy athletics for instance). Casual kilts can be with or with out, but a traditional highland sporran usually does not look right. Fanny pack worn to the front or matching cloth sporran/cargo pockets are better, IMHO.
