Btw...I'm surprised none of our Historians have regaled us as to the origin of the kilt check.

    Here's a bit:
Kilts have been traditionally worn without undergarments since their use as part of Scottish military uniform, leading to the invention of such expressions as "go regimental" or "military practice" for wearing no underwear.[2][3] On the Western Front during the First World War, some Sergeants Major reportedly had mirrors tied to the end of golf clubs or walking sticks to inspect up and under the kilt at parade inspection.

You should come to Norway. Kilts are very unusual here but the bars would probably let you in just because you go regimental. We Norwegians are very liberal that way.

I'd be inclined to ask him what HE was wearing under his pants....

    And more to the point....

I wouldn't spend any time or money there.

I worry about any man that inquires about my underwear (or lack of).
Refer to "The Question" and appropriate repsonses such as "why, are you looking for a date?"

Well, technically speaking, you weren't kicked out of a bar -- you were denied entry... Same thing though, I guess.

Nonetheless, that's really terrible and I hope many XMTS members (myself included) see to it that the establishment's management get a snootful of emails and phone calls about this incident.

It's none of anyone's business what kind of underwear anyone's wearing (or the lack thereof) and indeed if this were a woman getting asked if she had any panties on under her skirt, there would be hell to pay.

Sent the following e-mail to Kildare's:

    Dear Sir or Madam:

It is with sincere regret that I was recently informed by a clansman today about an incident that took place on February 13, 2009 outside one of your establishments. It seems that a security guard (bouncer) employed by Kildare's denied entry to an individual after he had inquired whether he was wearing underwear with the kilt he had on. When it was, in fact indicated that he did not, the bouncer did not let the gentleman enter.

I sincerely question the training and professionalism of Kildare's staff, not only to ask such a personal question but to then turn away a patron because he was wearing a kilt in the traditional manner? Perhaps Kildare should add a disclaimer to its website stating that the man dancing in his kilt IS, in fact, wearing underwear.

If this had happened with a female guest, I can only imagine what the consequences may have been. In your professional opinion, is it appropriate for a bouncer to ask a lady whether she is wearing any panties under her skirt? If not, then why should the same courtesy not be extended to male guests wearing kilts?

I hope that you will take the time to consider this e-mail as well as any others that may arise from the fact that our clansman has brought this to our attention on an online forum. We are a large group of kilt-wearing people who take pride in our heritage and attire. It's truly unfortunate that an establishment that claims Celtic pride does not recognize the very thing that distinguishes those who are proud to wear the kilt.

I have made a copy of this e-mail and posted it on our clan's website so that others may also stay informed regarding this situation.

    Regretfully,

    Jim Dunlop

And on the website they have a guy dressed in a kilt dancing outside the pub!

Did they ask him the same question before they filmed?

This reads like the doorman is a nosy pervert who wants to know whether other guys wear underwear. Worse he is also a control freak by denying entry. At best he needs some training at worst he should be sacked, I am sure there are plenty of decent people would be glad of the job in these times of recession.

If you need a job, there is probably going to be an opening with your name on it as a bouncer at the door of a bar.

Well, I'm here in Pennsylvania and would also like to know which "kildare's" it was. In fact, at some time, I believe I have been in the King of Prussia estab. Maybe I missed the location on previous posts, but I would also like to email the manager as did Jim Dunlop (good letter!). Malcolm
