Apparently I posted a link and its waiting for Admin review.
I have some cleats, so I'm good there. Going to order my kilt this weekend. going with XL Sportkilt. For shirts... We wear the Scottish Heavy Athletics Shirt provided for the games.

I'm watching a TV show that just featured a short segment of the Grandfather Mtn. games, and showed a wrestler wearing a camo kilt and work boots. I don't check his socks, though.

I am not a heavy games athlete. I am, however, heavy, and I can't imagine a more comfortable kilt for a Heelan' athlete than a SportKilt, in large part because of the elastic in the back. Great for bending, turning, etc.

BigMike,
First remember, one doesn't 'compete' in Highland Games--one SURVIVES them ;-) Comfort and durability are key. As to kilts, most of us wear either Stillwaters, Sportkilts or USAKilts. Really, it's up to your own taste and comfort. I personally use Sportkilts and Stillwater (Thrifty's on warm days, standards on cold days).
As far as foot gear, I've seen everything from expensive Tanel cleats, to cheap old football shoes to boots. Gotta be careful with cleats and shoose what you know will work for you. A cleat that grabs too much can cause a nasty knee injury when spinning on WFD for instance. Then there's the whole boots with blades for Hammer throw.
Bottom line I guess is find what is most comfortable and durable and know that you will trash it. I see some guys bring in a large rolling cooler-like container packed with gear. For me--everything I use fits in a back back. Again--personal choice.
My personal opinion--This isn't high tech---we throw stones, ball and chains and trees afterall :-)
