If you are looking at carving a design and having it cast, you could use pewter.

Ah! Pewter would be even easier. Thanks. Not sure why that didn't come to mind in the first place...
I had also been thinking about the "cut steel" buttons and buckles that have been brought up in other threads, but I had never heard of a cantle done that way.

Here is an option, I've never messed with it as of yet but how about faux Ivory? I think a nicely carved ivory cantle would be off the chain so to speak. Another thought is bright copper. As for wood, there are many species of wood that are incredibly hard and strong. Iron wood is one. Of course to make it really nice, you could make the cantle out of a dense wood and inlay it with different materials. That would make one unique sporran.

Oh, I don't know. It might be that I don't need a dress sporran in the first place. It seemed like a fun project, though.

I think pewter might be alright if I were to do it, but I don't recall coming across mention of a pewter cantle. Makes me wonder if there is something wrong with it; though there are pewter buttons.
