Hand Sewn MacNeil of Barra from USA Kilts

Thank you for your perspective. I will endeavor to add a tweed argyll to my wardrobe. I will also obtain some solid colour neckties. I do hope to visit the Highlands one of these days, and would like my kit to be in proper order. I appreciate all the help I can get on this forum.

Mixed tartans:
The tartan that I am wearing is MacNeil of Barra. The kilt and flashes are Ancient, and the tie is the Modern. After looking at the picture a few times, I am inclined to go with Jock Scot, and get a solid colour tie.

The hose and flashes. I have tried turning the hose down further, only to have the flashes bend further out. It has nothing to do with the hose or flashes, but the bulge of my legs. Probably garter ties would be more appropriate, and look better to boot.

Don't forget that another necktie option would be a club tie; If I remember correctly, you are a member of a genealogical organization -- Mayflower descendants/SAR, etc.? A crested or even striped club tie is always appropriate to wear with Highland day attire.

Reading over the comments, Steeve, it sounds like you're on your way there. I understand what you're saying on the flashes, they're stiff, so the garter ties would probably do the trick.

Also reading, I think it is the use of any tartan tie, matching or not, that is being considered offencive. The use of tartan flashes is not so welcome, as well. I like to go to the second hand or Good Will store and feel through all the ties for the ones that are not silk or silk like. The wool ties work out real well for me; just a thought.

I do have some club ties. Mayflower, S.A.R., Pilgrim Society, etc. The biggest issue for me is not having a colour clash. My colour coordination is poor at best. My Mayflower tie is a blue that does not seem to scream at the kilt. I will try that next time. With the tweed argyll that I haven't ordered yet. A new jones department.

I believe it was Rathdown that mentioned one time that club/regimental/school ties need not necessarily match exactly with a tartan or shirt; Noted kiltmaker Bob Martin discusses this as well in his book All About Your Kilt.

Personally, I love to see a crested or striped club/regimental tie with a kilt. I recently posted a photo of HRH the Duke of Rothesay wearing a Gordon Highlanders regimental tie with day attire -- of course the caveat to this post being that a person should not wear a tie they are notentitled to.

Don't worry too much about all this colour coordination nonsense------we don't! Just avoid white hose and all will be well!

winter is still blowing hard here in the NW, just as I imagine it did on Barra back in the day. I think I heard Anrothan McNeil when the wind was blowing today & say "Steve, forget the tie boy, row Kismul's Galley!!!"

I agree with Laird... Looking good!! I say mix & match ancient with modern, great way to get a conversation started about what they mean.

The Argyle jacket looks fine without the waistcoat, and you are correct to wear it open (if it were closed it would obscure your kilt belt).

And I would have to agree that the tartan tie should go, replace it with a solid colour, mixing tartans is never a good idea.

But on the whole a very good looking outfit.
