I know a lot of guys who wear tweed blazers with kilts. I think it is okay. Is that Brian Cox in the photo?

It's not really "okay." I jacket made for the kilt is appropriate in this case. The jacket shown is too long, and for the reasons already given by others, just doesn't pass muster.

It's a structural issue more than a fashion issue. A kilt jacket is cut short so that it doesn't interfere with the swing of the pleats. If you wear a "standard" jacket with a single vent in the back (most North American jackets), it WILL get caught in the pleats.

The jacket is also cutaway to accommodate the sporran.

As far as fashion is concerned: A kilt's waist is located much higher that a pair of trousers, so when a "standard" jacket is worn with a kilt it looks as if a boy raided his father's closet!

One thing that seems to be overlooked here... Mr. Cox's entire outfit is tailored from the same material. That seems to give it the benefit of a cohesive look, rather than simply throwing any old suit coat on with his kilt.

For me its all about proportion. A standard length jacket obscures all those amazing pleats and creates an awkward conflict of shapes. It also seems to make a person look rather shorter and frumpier. A high waisted kilt and matching jacket gives the appearance of longer legs and a shorter torso - a shape that suggests a more youthful profile.

BTW the kilt suit worn by Brian Cox looks like one of Howie Nicholsby's creations from 21st century kilts. In fact I think Howie was wearing that very style kilt suit the first time I met him - and yes he looked much better in it than Brian...

Looking at it again it does look like a TFCK design, the waistcoat looks like one I've seen before from Howie, nonetheless wearing a sportcoat or suit jacket does not really look right with a kilt.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it wouldn't let the jacket hang or lay correctly if the jacket wasn't cut for the sporran. As far as the length, even trousers fitted to be worn at the true waiste looks better with a shorter jacker.

Yes, in this picture it seems to work, but I think not in reality. But it does make me want to get a navy blue kilt-jacket.
