The Preeble's book is good, but if you can find it (probably in a library rare book room) "Chamber's History of the Rebellion in Scotland 1715-1746" is worth a read. I found the three volume set in a used book store about 30 years ago. It was published in 1815 and contains many first hand accounts that can not be found anywhere else.

It's also remembering the aftermath of the battle and the punishments and prohibitions that followed it.

Aye, black for mourning is good for today. But remember, that the symbol of the Stewarts is the white cockade. So, black for mourning but white for remembrance of James III and his son, Prince Charles Edward.

Of course I will be kilted, and the blue bonnet will be worn with an extra bit of pride today.

Duh, totally forgot. Couldn't kilt today anyway as I am in scrubs doing procedures, but I did, by chance, wear my bonny blue bonnet (without the cockade though). Will toss down a wee dram or three tonite in remembrance. thanks for the reminder.

Glad to see everyone remembering Drumossie in their own way. For those who are curious about the battle, an excellent resource is our club's web page:

A nice video on the topic:

    Battlefield Britain: Battle of Culloden

Here's a nice map of the Battle:

And black for the Scots (and there were a number of them) who served in the Government ranks. There were probably more Scots who fought against Charles than supported him.

Since Jim asked for a story from Culloden, I would pick the story of Major Gillies Macbean, who killed fourteen government troops with a broadsword whilst defending a gap in a stone wall before he himself was killed. George Gordon, Lord Byron wrote of Macbean's feat:

The clouds may pour down on Culloden's red plain,
But their waters shall flow o'er its crimson in vain,
For their drops shall seem few to the tears for the slain,
But mine are for thee, my brave Gillies MacBain!

In an ironic twist of history, during the Indian Mutiny of 1857, General William MacBean of the 93rd killed 11 mutineers at the siege of Lucknow with his sword. For his actions, MacBean was awarded the Victoria Cross.

However, one of my favourite stories of the '45 concerns "Colonel Anne" Mackintosh:
