OK, excellent advice everyone! Thanks! I'm seem to have plateaued at 230 right now; the Thrifty-Kilt is inexpensive, so I'll start with that, and wait to see if I'm at an equilibrium or not before splashing out more for a high-end number.

I definitely want to get several solid-color kilts (including saffron). Listen to me - never worn one, already planning the entire closet!

Anyway, just bit the bullet, and placed an order with SWK. Thrifty-Kilt in Irish National, saffron flashes, leather sporran, leather belt, and kilt pin. I imagine that if I like it, and if I end up wearing it a lot, virtually all of those things will be upgraded in time.

Yes we do make up our own minds up here and in certain circumstances, M o R's rule number 6 does apply. That is just common courtesy and common sense. Although the "I admit nothing" rule still applies!

All great advise. I'd only add that if it's in the budget, I'd bump up to the new/old SWK Economy that was recently put back on the site. It will likely fit better than the Thrifty for only $20 more, and looks like a higher quality item.

Polite society does not ask and does not tell but quite frankly we tend to worry much less about such things in any case and allow the risk compensation factor its proper place. The infinitesimal risk of a split second glimpse of a human posterior is out of all proportion to the major discomfort and inconvenience and we do not consider naked statues an affront to public morality of decency the way they are viewed over there. It is much more likely to cause amusement rather than offence in a situation of innocent and brief (no pun intended) exposure in any case.

Well I can only observe that of course the "admit nothing" rule (or where would be the mystique) still applies but short of doing a sword dance with the aforementioned potential offended parties lying underneath or a deliberate deliberate flashing or mooning (which polite society would not do) (and which trousered and underweared types are more likely to do) then the chances of offending are somewhat remote. There are many ladies and children around when one steps out of the door so how one applies the courtesy and sense is a difficult point.

Those who wish to wear underwear in some or all circumstances will do so and I am not going to ask or check or criticise their choice.

But for those who do not it is equally their choice and an insinuation that in some circumstances they are irresponsible or discourteous or not using their common sense could be seen as an insult or denial of their freedom of choice. I don't doubt that such advice is given with the best of intentions but I for one will always oppose hard and fast rules especially when many ladies and children have not been shocked or scandalised or seen anything that they shouldn't.

Not to worry. Much to some peoples' dismay most of us make up their own mind here too. I found item #6 to be bizarre.

Going "regimental" or not is a personal choice, but many kilt wearers discover its one of the added joys of kilt wearing. I'm not endorsing reckless or anti-social behavior, but MoR speaks strictly for himself when he suggests that underwear "should" be worn anytime ladies are present.
