I have been to Edinburgh a few times and had no idea there was a statue of Abraham Lincoln there. I will be sure to visit it this summer when I am there. Learn something new everyday, thanks for sharing.

It a footnote in History... The Irish/Scots/et al who fought for freedom were sent to the reaches of the British Empire for the profit of British Subjects. We survived and some cases prospered in our own ways. The world is full of the descendents of these Rebels. I am proud to be descended from one of these men, James Claghorn a survivor of the Battle of Dunbar, and the march that followed.
Its good these chapters in History are there to remind us of the past. We cannot change it, but because of it, we have in some ways grown better for it.

Indeed -- the story of our ancestors may serve as inspiration to those of us in the present. As Edmund Burke said:
People will not look forward to posterity, who never look backward to their ancestors.

A few years ago, an Irish author wrote a novel, in which she depicted the case of a young Irish woman who was rounded up and shipped off to Barbados in this way. At that time, she was excoriated in the Irish press for writing about the topic.

Speaking of Scots and slavery, this topic is certainly germane to this thread:

Most folks do not realize that Robert Burns almost immigrated to the West Indies to work on a plantation:

Check out the song The Slaves' Lament, which has been attributed by some to Burns.

Maybe another piece of the puzzle.
Nonetheless, it open my eyes more
that ancestry doesn't go in a straight line.
