Go for the wool. You'll love it. I have both 13 and 16oz kilts. 13 oz works fine for me for formal or casual wear, in cold or hot weather.

Nick is an advertiser here and also a member. You can speak to him directly.
However, I would first check with Rocky at USA Kilts. First, Being on this side of the Atlantic you will save on shipping and duties. Second, Rocky makes a great custom Kilt. Both his Wool Kilts and his P/V Semi-Trad would be a perfect fit to your stated requirements.
:ootd:
I AGREE. I have a kilt from both. But Rocky & his KILTS are GREAT.
As to Variety of looks here is my "take

I would suggest wool in whatever tartan you feel appropriate, 13 or 16 pz, made up into a nice machine sewn 8 yard knife pleated traditional kilt. I have a couple HoS kilts and they are fine, a reasonable value. Scotweb makes a nice kilt as well, and offers a roughly 10% discount to xmarkers who access their site through this site by clicking on the advert top right of each page. If the prices are even close I would go with the Scotweb as they definitely have a better reputation overall, and exceptional customer service, besides being a major advertiser and supporter of xmarks.
If you are only getting one kilt and can afford a good one go with the wool. Handsewn is in someways nicer than machine sewn, for those who can appreciate the differences, but the price goes up significantly for that artisan quality, which few people will even be able to notice or appreciate the difference.
One man's opinion.

Hope you find exactly what you will be happy with and enjoy. It's probably best to aim for the high end of quality if you are able.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I want to thank everyone for the information that you have shared with me. With your suggestions, I am leaning toward getting a 16oz, 8yd kilt in the Gunn Clan Modern tartan from Scotweb.
I was a little concerned with the weight of the kilt I purchase. I've heard some say that a 16oz kilt is pretty heavy to wear during the summer months but I have also heard some mention on this thread that the 16oz works well all year long. Is this the common consensus with everyone?
Thank you also for sharing with me the different styles of dress. I wish I could just start purchasing everything I want but I will have to get started with the essentials and then add as I go. I figure that besides the kilt I should get a belt and buckle. A nice leather sporran and some Ghillie Brogues. I'm going to look into having my hose knitted by a family friend. Does this sound like a good start to everyone?

You're never gonna say, "I wish I had gone cheaper."
You may at some point choose to get a casual kilt, but you'll always have your awesome 8 yard tank to dress up or down as you see fit.

If it were me, I would pick Scotweb and USAKilts over Heritage of Scotland. If you're planning to acquire an outfit to get married in, I would suggest that a jacket and waistcoat should be considered before ghillie brogues or a belt and buckle.

I agree . IMHO, the "brogues" though nice to have, are 'limited in usage. ( I kilt up daily & except for semi-formal wear or above, I never wear them. ( BTW- I rent mine on the VERY FEW occasions. I have a nice pr of Dress shoes that I wear usually for even these occasions) )

"Heritage of Scotland" lacks heritage and is not Scottish. The Singh brothers, aka Gold Bros, don't even use their own names. I would buy my socks from them, but not my custom kilt.
