I agree with Rex on this one, we should just allow this to be his choice. If it is his belief, so be it."I may not agree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it" Remember? It even boils down to his right to chose a kilt and kilt maker!

Is it pleated in the back? Overlapping aprons in the front? Then, it's a kilt. Now, I am not personally a fan of the utilikilt. It is the cargo pants to my khaki pants. I wear khaki pants, but not cargo pants. I wear "normal" kilts, not utilikilts. But they are still kilts.
Now, I have a good friend who completely disagrees with me and calls a utilikilt not just a skirt, but an affront to nature. But she's Irish, so we can forgive her. :-)

Is a V6 Mustang really a sports car? It sure isn't a Lotus or Aston Martin, but it is an entry level sports car that fits the niche for many people.

Rex is unfortunately correct here. These conversation never end well on this board and we should move on.
In my opinion, the only thing that matters here is that now you know what his requirements are, and if he's serious about getting a kilt, you can use the wisdom found here to guide him to a kiltmaker who will satisfy.
Regards,
Rex.
And this is the best advice I can think to give to the original OP.
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

I feel the same as you, Joly.

Gentlemen: As Splash4 has pointed out, this thread has the potential to go off the rails very quickly.
Staying on topic is the best way to ensure a civilized debate. Neither of these posts really contributes anything to the subject.

While I fully admit that my comment was fairly frivolous, I respectfully disagree that george7's post did not contribute. I think george's makes a good point: The V6 mustang could be construed as the "utilikilt of the sports car world". The V6 mustang, while not at the same price level or performance level as a ferarri is still in the same family. Similarly, just because a utilikilt (or the like) may be less expensive than a full 8 yd 16 oz hand sewn from Scotland does not make it any less a kilt.
cheers,
Alex

Pleats in back, apron in front knee length= Scottish Kilt Pattern. Cloth is Tartan.
As above, but in other fabrics is still a Kilt.
Ancient Egyptian Kilts (so termed by Archaeologists) were more a wrap-around and knee or even upper thigh length. No pleats nor apron
Greek & Roman, also no pleats nor apron. but also short.
So, there is indeed a difference in these national styles, but to me, Kilts they are.
Longer, as in South Pacific is a different garment altogether, but the whole lot also qualify as 'Skirts' for men.
(Anyone who disagrees with me shall be dealt with severely, I have connections!!)
