I've never had a problem either, but I do work a number of fashion events over the course of the year and I choose not to wear fur for those functions where political correctness is an issue. I also chose, for I think obvious reasons, not to wear fur to the Humane Society fundraiser I worked kilted.

Assaulted? No. Nagged at? Yes. We have a vegan at work who is disgusted by everything I wear- wool comes from sheep, leather from dead animals, etc. However, other than the occasion "murderer" comment, I haven't had any issues. I once told him that the only thing vegetarian animals are good for is feeding the carnivores...

Nighthawk
You reminded me there was a woman at work that was disgusted in my Ferguson Britt Skunk, funny thing she was eating a Big Mac at the time. I commented on her choice of lunch and that was the end of the argument.

Go ahead and get the Ferguson Britt sporran, you'll love it! I have two, and wear them quite often. Here in Alaska, fur is pretty common, so the sporrans don't attract any attention for their materials. Remember, people are likely to be startled by your kilt and not notice much else anyway.

i only know one person who owns a sporran that is not plain leather and he wears a horse-hair one as part of his outfit for the Lonach March. he normally wears a leather one though.
personally i think 'mask' sporrans are hideous and people who wear them should be embarrassed and ashamed. i wouldn't blame anyone if they decided to throw paint over someone wearing a mask sporran... or even a fur 'dress' sporran.
i got a sealskin 'dress' sporran with my first kilt and the few times i wore it i felt sad. i now do not wear it. ever.
however...
if you are a hunter and you have gone out and hunted the animal, killed it, eaten it and had a sporran made from it's hide i guess i am ok with that as that is natural human behaviour. mass cullings of seals, minks or any other animal purely for their fur is an outrage though, and we as a race should have abandoned the practice centuries ago.

A Message from the Moderators
Panache with Mod Hat firmly on
Ladies and Gentlemen of XMTS,
This thread has been restored after a short review by the Moderating Staff of XMTS.
Since there was such interest as of late as to when a thread goes bad and the mods feel the need to intervene I and the other members of the Moderating Staff would like to welcome you all to the "Tipping Point" of this thread.
Despite my prior post attempting to warn that this type of thread has been come up again and again on XMTS and invariably turns political, heilanner has seen fit to post and sidle right up to the lines of our rules without a lot of respect for members who hold different opinions than his.
heilanner's post had nothing to do with the OP's original question but he took it on himself to take the opportunity to announce his feelings to all on fur sporrans.
It is almost a sure thing that this will in turn illicit a strong response from those who do not share his feelings regarding fur and the whole thread will be locked or pulled permanently because of political content.
So now that we have found ourselves here the question remains for the membership to decide how to proceed.
Do we wish to follow helianner off the OP's topic and get the thread locked/removed?
Or do we stick with the original question?
The choice is yours .
Respectfully
Jamie and the Mod Squad

All: Big thanks to Panache for moderating this minefield. The fault is mine - I should not have posted a temptation so easily mutated into a gathering of political soapboxes. I appreciate all of the posts, indeed, I expected and received honest opinions so thank you. While I can appreciate the sensitivities behind allowing a potentially heated post to continue, in this instance I readily defer to the experience of Panache, the Mod Squad and the Rabble.
Kilt On Everyone!

Panache,
This is a very cogent response. I thank you. May I respectfully suggest that in the wake of this explanation, the offending post be deleted, the explanation left in place and the thread be left open.
That's surely a good alternative, because...
To leave the offending post in place is to suggest a board bias or, at minimum, tolerance for one point of view but not the countervailing one.
Just my two cents....

Ha! There's probably a certain amount of skunk meat in a Big Mac anyway!
I think I see another educational video starring Troy McClure in the making...
Anyhoo, I think one might encounter a hostile reaction from some people if one was wearing a full mask sporran, as they obviously look they are made from an animal. As for other fur sporrans, people may think they're synthetic or cowhide, or not even notice at all. However, I can understand being worried about paint being thrown at a sporran, as that would ruin the kilt and everything else.

I was actually thinking I should ask Helianner if he wants to sell me that seal skin sporran so it doesn't go to waste cuz I like furry little creatures and I'm a member of PETA - People Eating Tasty Animals
