I like pleating to the stripe but feel this would look great pleated to the sett.

Yeah this one I am leaning towards pleated to the set....but don't start thinking there is a "right" answer to this ;)

I have see somewhere a pleating to the stripe that alternates between a red and a yellow stripe. This one could be done that way. I really liked the way that kilt looked.

Yellow stripe would be a more pipe band/military look, while the sett would be more of a "civilian" style.

If it were me, I'd pleat to the sett. As to the number of pleats... in the 40+ years I've been wearing the kilt I have never bothered to count the number of pleats. Frankly, I can't figure out why the number of pleats wuld be important-- either the kilt looks good and fits well, or it doesn't. A good kilt maker will use the number of pleats necessary to make the kilt-- no more, no less.

    MacMillan,

You know, I've never thought it mattered either. I was talking to a guy in a kilt shop a month or two ago and he was really pushing this kilt I had eyeballed and bragging about how many pleats it had. So for some reason, I guess, I started to think that more pleats=nicer kilt. Clearly I've been mistaken because you are absolutely right, I really don't care. Thanks! As to the pleating, I am starting to lean to the sett. I think the stripe is cool but you loose the red. Thanks all for the input. I'll surely post some pics when it's done. I'd imagine a test drive will be in order , before the wedding...

    Cheers,

    Joshua C. McIntosh

I like the double red, but if I were to choose between the yellow stripe or the sett, I'd go for the sett.

You know, it really seems to be a hidden truth of those who actually know kilts, that the number of pleats is entirely a function of estimated desired lenght (i.e 8 yard kilt) , the size of the wearer, pleating style and the sett of the tartan.... it's funny...if "more pleats = better quality" ...then men of substance would have the highest qualitiy kilts as a rule ;)

I would pleat to sett, as it's more of a traditional civilian way of doing it. There are those who like pleating to stripe, but they're far from being the majority.
