The "regulation" doublet got its name because it conformed to the "regulations" for civilian Highland attire, as set forth in the book "Dress Worn At Court". This book was issued and up-dated, more or less annually, by the Lord Chamberlain.

A handy guide, it sets out the regulations for civilian attire (including Highland dress), and more than 200 uniforms, to be worn on official occasions, in the presence of the Sovereign, when attending events at the Palace.

MacMillan of Rathdown failed to mention that the "regulation" doublet most certainly may be worn by civilians anywhere where the dress is formal, ie. black or white tie, and pretty much is the default doublet among those who know about these things. It is a much nicer doublet than the Prince Charlie coatee, which really isn't the best look with the kilt. IMHO. His advice about choosing a regulation doublet over a PC is very wise, and will set you apart as a man of discerning tastes, who knows how to do it right!

I bought a Prince Charlie online from Pakistan from Geoffrey. I forget the cost but it was very reasonable. I did have to have the vest altered, but Geoffrey sent me a check for that cost. He shipped the coat and vest in a package labeled "Sample Goods" so there wasn't any duty paid that I could see.

The fit is fine now, the quality is fine for clothes I may wear once a year at best.

    Hope this helps.

These people were supposed tobe friends!). On E-bay scottishtartanstore is selling them for $165 for a 15oz black barathea with all the usual goodies and says that this is a top quality product and not budget in any way.
Here is my question: Has anyone here ever bought or heard of anyone buying a jacket through this company?
I've actually been in their shop in Maryhill, Glasgow and their jackets are good quality. They mainly sell Scottish-made products too - other than some of their tartans being produced from Marton Mills.
They're a good shop and will provide you with good service and they've always got a few people in the office incase you need any questions answered. If you want to save some money they will reduce the ebay fees if you just ask them if you can pay by Paypal. This will drop the price by 10% if they accept and I'm sure they will!
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

What is your opinion of the Sheriffmuir Doublet for these occasions?
