Finally have the book, "How the Scots Invented the Modern World."

Ok, I finnished the book. I have a better understanding of the flow of events etc, rather than a hodge podge of this event or that event. Arthur Herman seems to do a good job of connecting it all together.

Did you all know that Gene Roddenberry made the engineer of the Starship Enterprise Scottish because of the reputation of the Scots for technical excellence! Apparently Edinburgh had the first school of engineering in the world.

I've had that book for about 2 years, but have neglected reading it. I did start on it once, but didn't finish the first page. Turned out to be a very busy day at work. I'll have to give it another try!

Hey, fellas -- contrary to conventional wisdom, there actually quite a few history books out there that aren't boring. Several of the comments in this thread are breaking this history instructor's heart.

No, there's plenty of interesting history books. I had just finnished one on ancient celtic cultures and the Druids to get that strait in my mind partly because those subjects come up all the time: Peter Berresford Ellis's book The Druids.

I also read Gregory Curtis's book, The Cave Painters: Probing the Mysteries of the World's First Artists, because he gives good written descriptions of the cave paintings along with an historical overview of the archeology and people discovering them; it's the caves in Europe and the Paleolithic people.

Yay! I found several of the works by Harry Home, or Lord Kames. I already have works from Adam Smith and David Hume. I have Robert Burns too.
