Good points, here!
One item that I see is that the pin can be either through -both- the apron and underlying material OR in just the apron, alone.
From what I have gathered from drum major and military manuals is that the pin is through the apron, alone. Thoughts on that one?
I must admit that I have pinned it through both materials when I thought the wind was going to be a problem!

I agree with Jack Daw (... 4 inches up and 2 in.). I remember reading four 'fingers' up and three 'fingers' in is proper placement - and personally this just 'looks right'. Bearing in mind I consider the sett when placing the pin, but the 4" x 2" or 4 finger x 3 finger rules work very well.

By reading all of the above, I think you get the idea that pin placement is a matter of personal taste. The only "rule" would be to fasten the pin ONLY through the apron.
