    I wear an Irish-made pull-over, a commando-style pull-over with a V-neck when I wear a tie, and another commando-style with a crew neck. I don't roll them up or tuck them in.

Sweaters do look good with the kilt. I wear mine with the sweater outside and unrolled, it just would not look right any other way. Oh and there is no need for a belt when wearing a sweater.

    Kilt and sweaters

I think a fine wool, gray v-neck sweater, tucked in of course, along with a white shirt and tightly knotted tie would give one a very intellectual look. White hose would add to the impression.

As a knitter, never tuck in a sweater

    Here's another thought.

Like Hamish said, if you think the sweater needs to be "fixed" at the bottom, it is perhaps too long. But, even if it is an OK length, it may be too "big". I have several sweaters that were just too big around for me. I'm 6'3", and if a sweater is not "long" sized, I have to buy an extra-large to get the sleeve length I need. That means that it was made to fit around someone with considerably more girth than I have. Thus the sweater hangs badly, in my opinion.

My fix is to take up the slack along the side seams. Most sweaters are joined along a seam from the arm pit to the hem. Turn the sweater inside out and stitch (small and numerous by hand...use a machine if you can) another seam inside the first. I'll take up several inches at the hem end, tapering to nothing at the arm pit. When done, just cut off the excess material (which includes the original seam) and you're done. By fitting a bit more snugly at the waist, you solve the need to tuck or roll or otherwise adjust the bottom of the sweater.

I have only worn one sweater and that was a sweater vest. This was for Burns dinner last year. I did not have a proper jacket so I wore this. The picture is a little dark so it is hard to see any detail. The sweater came down to the belt. The kilt is a USAKilt American Heritage.

I'm with Hospitaller & Hamish on this one. Shirts tucked in - sweaters & sweater vests never. No belt just a sporran - its a great look in my opinion.

I've only worn one once and I left it untucked. I rolled the edging of it up so it didn';t touch my sporran.
I have t-shirts that I mainly only wear with kilts - as I bought them shorter specifically to wear with my kilt untucked. It's just my "fashion".

It's all down to your personal taste. I generally dont tuck anyhing but a shirt (buttoned even/dress) into my kilt
