Oh dear no. Just think how heavy a kilt pin would need to be in order to 'hold the apron down' The kilt pin is a Victorian affectation, is completely unnecessary and worse, can do serious damage to your front apron when you catch it. Go pin free.

My mother always pinned the two aprons together every time I wore a kilt - I suppose that was the reason for their demise, as I can distinctly remember the under apron being patched after I ripped it when the pin caught on a branch as I was climbing an apple tree.
We had 120 of them, plus plum and pear trees, far too much of a temptation, even though none of them was on a dwarfing rootstock.
With the big safety pin type you can make them a bit more secure by gently pulling the open pin into a wider V, which puts more outward pressure on the pin, holding it more firmly into the fastening.
Another option is to fasten the pin then pass a strong sewing thread under the point of the pin several times - wrapping it around the double loop of wire, effectively closing off the pins exit route. Tie the ends of the thread to secure it.
