As Matt is the designer of our Tartan it is really up to him if he wishes to offer it in a color change to create an 'ancient' version.
But can I ask, what is wrong with the original?
The colors for the original X Marks Tartan were chosen for very specific reasons.
As we are X Marks and our symbol is reminiscent of the Scottish Saltaire we chose the Blue and White to represent the White cross on the Blue background.
The Grey was chosen because of the typing on the computer screen.
And the Yellow was chosen to represent the 'smiley's'. (sorry, we couldn't figure out how to put a pith helmet on it.)
In the case of the X Marks Tartan the thread count or arrangements of the colors was done simply to create a pleasing Tartan. It was the specific colors that were important.
So I guess what I'm asking is, if variants like 'ancient' and 'weathered' are simply color changes, would the colors still mean as much as they do in the original?

I really like the original, because nice blue tartans are few and far between.
But the idea of other variations is still fun.

I didn't think the original was available any more...but I'm still new here.

Steve has a very valid point. The colors chosen for the X Marks the Scot tartan were specifically chosen to reflect this forum. The honest thruth is I came up with the colors for the tartan simply by looking at my computer screen with this site loaded up on it, and letting the forum itself dictate the palette (I seem to remember it had a solid blue background at the time; obviously it wasn't the tartan). :-)
So having a green based hunting tartan wouldn't have the same meaning in terms of the colors. However, there is no law that says tartan colors must needs be symbolic. And if people thought there was a demand for an "X Marks Hunting" tartan, then why not? It would develop a symbolic importance of its own.
So I guess the question is, is there interest?

Perhaps the "Hunting Tartan" could be restricted to those who use the search feature on the site?

The question would then be how does Steve check that Xmarks member bloggs knows how and does use the search features?
That being said i think i preferd the muted one over hunting (probaly beacuse I never find anything when i search!) But I am a big fan of the original one too and Im hoping theres another run this year beacuse I want some

I'm interested...and I use the search feature. So, where do I find the chief?

Would the tartan in "Muted" colors only be for lurkers, or maybe those who have been sanctioned by the Forum?
Would "Ancient" be reserved for only those over, say, age 65? Or maybe available only to forum members who have been members for more than 5 years?
"Weathered" just for those with the worn out look that they have been "rode hard and put away wet"?
Just a thought.
