    I'll just throw this in for what it's worth... I was looking at the pleating last weekend of the San Antonio Pipes and Drums. For starters, they all wear different tartans (I'm guessing they don't do competitions). But the rest of their uniforms were fairly consistent. And all their kilts were pleated to the stripe, regardless of tartan.

    But obviously every pipe band does it differently. So the answer is: there is no answer!

    Some tartans like my Stewart of Atholl kilt wouldn't quite work being pleated to the stripe whereas my Hunting Stewart kilt wouldn't look as good pleated to the sett. I think that it can sometimes depend on the tartan.
