I can't bear the thought of owning anything that wasn't functional in at least 2 different ways. With that in mind I found a nice little knife from Gerber Knives that for me made a perfect sgian. I made a little leather sheath for it as it came with a tactical plastic locking one, but that ws the only modification I had to do.
here it is in the sheath

and with the blade exposed

I've always carried a pocket knife and would feel naked without one. When kilted, my sgian is used for everything my pocket knife would be, from opening a parcel to cutting up a muffin at the coffee shop. BTW, that's a sharp (pun intended) looking knife Jackson.

I have that model, among other uses once carried it in my fishing vest. It has a very sharpenable and useful blade, and I too have used it as a sgian. Trouble is, the handle is so non-ornamental.

LOL thanks for the compliment Laurie. I think for the whole 7 5/8 inches it takes up in my hose it is more then adequate and I have used it many times for quick fixes and cutting jobs. I also carry a multi-plier, and sharp folder on me at almost any given moment.

Sgian Carry in the USA
I carry a functional sgian, because I always carry a functional knife, not as a weapon, but a tool. That given, the laws in the USA vary considerably from state to state. In my home state, open carry of firearms is forbidden, but open carry of other weapons is legal if not done in a violent or threatening manner. (I am not a lawyer, so this advice is worth what you are paying for it). With the handle visible sticking out of the hose top, this is a non violent open carry, and perfectly legal.

I have, which was advertised, as an officers sgian dubh, which has a standard bottle opener, a wine bottle opener and a screwdriver, all within the handle and a stainless steel edged blade. I find it usefull at balls and the like to open wine bottles and used it this last weekend at the local highland games to cut a piece of plastic for covering up when a downpour occured

THE OFFICER sgian dubh by Gaelic Themes is probably the most functional sgian dubh readily accessible on the open market. Undoubtedly it's greatest attribute is its wide, full length tang, making it one of the strongest (if not the strongest) sgians dubh available.
