Have you tried Bugpiper on e-bay ? He's Steve McVeigh from Caledon, Northern Ireland and he’s an ex-Gordons piper. I have traded with him in the past and is very good and straight – no bad surprises from him. He has a business for bagpipes, piper’s dress and ex-British army Scottish regimental uniforms and kilts etc. Through him I got a complete head-to-toe Argylls No 1 dress uniform, with Glengarry, piper green doublet, No 1a kilt, dress belt and buckle, “Swinging Six” sporran and white strap, red/white Menzies hose-tops, spats, brogues, flashes and white gloves. The regimental kilt still had its base-stitching in place.

I also bought the hats of all the Scottish regiments with modern badges, blackcock tails, hackles etc as appropriate, including Scots Guards and RSDG peaked caps. I also got from him the old metal badges of all the old Scottish regiments pre-various mergers.

If you try him on e-bay, then you can mention me, Lachlan Gow.

If you want his e-mail, I can give it to you in a PM.

The 'Eathen in his idleness bows down to wood and stone,
'E don't obey no orders unless they is his own,
He keeps his side arms awful,
And he leaves them all about,
Until up comes the Regiment and kicks the 'Eathen out.

My brother served a hitch in the Navy. He was a chaplain's assistant on the Kitty Hawk (despite having never darkened the door of a church - typical Navy thinking!). One day in home port he was detailed to give the Quartermaster a hand with some inventory chores. After counting twice they had a pea coat that was unaccounted for. The Quartermaster turned to my brother said it would take more paperwork than it was worth to either add it to their stores or return it to central stores so if he wanted it he could have it. That's how I got a nice, government issue pea coat.

    Regards,

    Brian

This reminds me of a story from my family. My father has a beautiful (48 star) US flag, which is gargantuan. I believe it's from some naval ship. It had been the property of the boy scout camp he worked for, and was inventoried, I believe, as "eaten by rats, properly retired."

Thanks for posting that photo of the Nova Scotia Highlanders.

A very interesting uniform. Is that MacDonald tartan they wear?

In The Uniforms and History of the the Scottish Regiments: Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa by Major R Money Barnes, evidently written in the mid-1950's (there is no date of publication), the author gives:

    The North Nova Scotia Highlanders

    organised 1871- Cumberland Provisional Battalion
    1885- 93rd Cumberland Battalion
    1900- 93rd Cumberland Regiment
    1920- The Cumberland Regiment
    1927- The Cumberland Highlanders
    1941- present title

Uniform: blue diced Glengarry, scarlet doublet with white facings, Murray of Atholl tartan kilt, sporran white with five black tassels, scarlet and green hose, green garter flashes.

The North Nova Scotia Highlanders were amalgamated with the Pictou Highlanders in 1954 to form the Nova Scotia Highlanders.

This is a question along the same kind of lines.......

What do these bands and societies do with their kilts when they change or "upgrade"? Is there some kind of great big second hand kilt sale I don't know about? Has anyone though about contacting any of their local bands and asking about purchasing old, superseeded wear?

Here in Oz, I have seen on some bands websites that they do advertise surplus/old/redundant, kilts/hair sporrans/doublets/hose tops etc at reasonable prices. It's just a matter of checking the sites and seeing what they have to offer against what you are after. I suppose that you could get in touch with an official of any band and ask about surplus gear. The worst that could happen is that they say "sorry we don't have any" They may possibly know of a band that does though. Good luck in your hunting
