5 Modern kilts looks from Panache

CMcG asked that I take a look and contribute to his thread.

Reading through the responses and looking at the photos posted I have to note that a good number of the outfits shared really don’t seem to be very “modern”. I think there is a difference between traditional looking kilts that are mass produced, machine sewn, and/or of synthetic materials and a true “Modern/Contemporary” kilt. These traditional looking kilts follow the same fashion guidelines as a hand sewn wool tartan one. The same goes for solid color traditional looking kilts (which are actually more traditional than tartan ones!)

As for true modern kilts (like Union kilts, Utilikilts, R-Kilts, Amerikilts, etc) …

From Panache answers the big kilt questions

#13 Do Modern Kilts follow the same rules as Traditional Highland Attire?

No. Modern kilts (such as Utilikilts, R Kilts, etc.) are their own thing. One can certainly take inspiration from traditional highland attire but following it too closely doesn’t really work and creates an incongruous look with a modern kilt. If you really want to wear Argyll jackets, flashes, fancy sporrans, etc. then please stick to traditional looking kilts. Being such a new fashion there really aren't any set rules for modern kilts but one should try to come up with an entire outfit where all elements all work together.

Now at the conclusion of our thread “ 1 Kilt 10 Looks : A Visual Guide to Formality in Highland Attire”

    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-attire-48691/

Glen and I stated regarding modern kilts

“…We find that there are some solid principles of traditional highland dress that can be applied to them, but as a current fashion there really aren't any set rules for dressing up or down a modern kilt. With no disrespect intended toward modern / contemporary kilts (we both each own at least one) we also feel that most modern / contemporary styled kilts lack the incredible versatility of the traditional kilt…”

With this in mind I wondered how far could you take a modern kilt in terms of formality. Taking a careful look at both at my old photos and my wardrobe I tried to see how much I could dress up in a modern kilt. I deliberately tried to avoid too much reference to highland attire and my only requirement was that the photos would have to be an outfit I would wear out and about today.

    Olive green Sport Kilt

    Maroon X Kilt

    Camo X Kilt

    Gray UK Mocker

For the record, IMHO a sweater vest, dress shirt, tie, and semi dress shoes are as formal as I could successfully take any of my modern kilts. I think the most successful of these outfits is the maroon one that takes a modern kilt and goes with a Hawaiian/sarong inspiration instead of a Highland one. Then again I may be partial to it because it is so comfortable...

    ...and matches my pipe!

    Cheers

    Oh Dear, here goes.

The Clan MacEfes prior to the Highland Games in Kyrenia in 2006. The Clan are dressed in MacEfes Tartan but the Chief is in Hunting MacEfes. I understand that some of the Clan were giving the Clan 'salute' and that this has caused offence to some X-markers so I've airbrushed the 'salutes' out - hope that does the trick.

    The Chief and his lady.

The Chief with his Great War Targe - "I have drunk the blood of my enemies and have nailed their skins to my targe".

Fairly conventional. Muted MacKay, suede shoes and matching hose tops and pullover.

The Chief in the shot putt. Note the 'fly plaid'.

    Hi-vis kilt and accessories.

The Hunting MacEfes (DPM) and the Hi-vis kilt were made by me from the full 8 yards. They were made for 'fancy dress' occasions although I do sometimes wear them for sporting activities.

Wow! See You Jimmy hats and flipping us off, and after all the bloviating about what is or is not suitable for wear with a kilt for various occasions.

    As to my 'modern kiltwear', depending on the occasion and temperatures this is pretty much my regular daily kit;

Are you suggesting that I was not dressed suitably for the occasion?

People on this site ask for advice. There is no point in being wishy washy about giving that advice. That doesn't help them at all. In fact the only thing I've been particularly robust on is the 'flatcap' issue (The devils headgear when worn with a kilt! Sorry Wolfman - its must be a transatlantic thing: flatcaps and kilts are clearly conventional in America). I always point out that there are no rules only conventions but if you are going to flout conventions do it deliberately not from ignorance.ith:

Hothir - I like your jackets. I was looking at a natural coloured jeans jacket in TK Max and wondering if it might make a suitable casual jacket. The answer is it probably would have done if I was your age and not quite so fat.

That's actually the same jacket. It's a Cold War East German army uniform cut down and (in the second photo) dyed.

Edited to include pic... Swordfighting in a kilt.

Works well, even looks like gauntlet cuffs in the picture.

    or playing in the park
    [IMG][/IMG]
    Out shopping
    [IMG][/IMG]
Lets up it a notch or three

Or if we want to get really snazzy

My modern kilts. The brown plaid fabric (macfabricstore tartan?) is made into a 5 yard knife pleated kilt with deep under apron pleats and narrow rectangular aprons.

The red is box pleated with the same narrow apron. Both have interior "snap tape" for closure.

Both kilts are made with a wide waistband and sit at my "jeans waist"

2002 I started wearing modern kilts. This one is the first Utilikilt model. It didn’t have an apron but was “closed” and had a zipper on the front and pleats there, too:

My first Utilikilt. The picture is taken outside Lugano in August 2002

2003 I bought two Amerikilts, as well as my second UK. It was a postal blue original. The color is no longer available. I like the color and at least in Denmark it has no connotations to postal service.

    Amerikilt, sand, Tuscany, spring 2003

    Amerikilt, olive, Switzerland, August 2003

Postal blue Utilikilt, Lugano, Switzerland, August 2006

2005 it was time for a black Utilikilt with aprons.

The pictures of the black UK Original are from our summer holidays 2009 in Lugano

My favorite UK is the Original in tan. I got it in 2007.

From a morning walk north of Copenhagen in June 2009

Me in my tan Utilikilt Original August 2009

2008 I bought my last UK so far. It is an olive Mocker.
