We used to call the thistle seeds 'angels' when we were children - 50 years ago in South Yorkshire.

It is really beautiful to see the seeds rising from a patch of thistles in a light breeze on a warm afternoon.

And how do you know that we aren't being cultivated by the thistles?

Just counting the ones at the edge of the patio, I have two 2½', one 3', one 5', and one 6' tall. Unfortunately, the other 6' thistle succumbed to height + lack of rain - it toppled over and is now growing sideways. One flower is still in bloom, and two more should be opening shortly.
