Ah, I might have mentioned that... it's going to be a very modern style - I'm going to try and implement a 'utilikilt' style to it (with detachable side pockets). Something I can be really creative with. I'll try a more traditional approach when my sewing skills are a little better (my wife is gonna be helping me with this one - a LOT). But I think that between the two of us, we can get it done in a couple/few days.

Box pleats, obviously - with brass/tarnished metal buttons/snaps. In my mind, it looks awesome (as far as modern kilts go), but we'll see! I'm gonna find a JoAnn's Fabric now!

EDIT: I take the box pleats back - I'm leaning toward the Kengussie style. Will it work? We shall see. Pics will be posted!

Have you seen the XKilt plans? They are really detailed and seem pretty straight forward.

That is the style I use and like a lot - even in a crease loving fabric.

I make the centre back inverted pleat large enough so that when opened out I can sit on it, and any creases are fairly well hidden when I stand up and the folds fall back into place.

Also advise good deep pleats under the apron - the one I am wearing now has approximately 9 inch deep under apron pleats, so the pair take about a yard of fabric, but are a great help in maintaining modesty if I should decide to vault a gate or do any of the other things I get up to.

Okay, so after some prolonged research on the topic, I bought all my materials (pins, needles, thread, and the fabric - green khaki duck cloth - plus some snaps and buckles since I'm putting *gasps* pockets on it).

I decided to do a cross between tradtional and modern - it will be traditional in the sense that it will have full front and under aprons, but modern in the sense that it will sit a little lower on the waist and have cargo pockets on the sides with knife pleats (the box and kingussie pleats just seemed a little complicated for a man of my sewing skill - none). Add some belt loops to it and hopefully this delusion of grandeur will come to fruition of sorts.

Unfortunately I didn't get to start on it when I would have liked due to a sick wife and child (how I managed to avoid it, I don't know), but this weekend will be almost entirely dedicated to making it work!

I think duck cloth was a good choice. That seems to be what Utilikilts uses for their Workman model, which I love, although I'm not sure about their other models. I can wear mine all day and while you will be able to see that the pleats have been crushed or sat on, they won't get too terribly deformed-looking. UK does stitch the creases in the pleats, though, for reasons mentioned earlier in the thread. So you'll probably end up needing to do that.

Like I said, it might be a delusion of grandeur but I have it envisioned in my head as being sewn down every pleat so it retains the proper structure, shape and size throughout it's various uses. But as I look back on my shopping list, I realize there was ONE thing I forgot to purchase: a soft, comfortable liner! Looks like another trip to JoAnn's Fabrics for me!
