I can only assume that there is a structural advantage...that and that the gadget is intended to make knitting a tube simple and easy...?

Gadget + wife= many garter ties rapidly turned out. Maybe a new business venture...

A tube tends to be stretchier.

Another idea that I've done is to crochet some. I chained on a small hook, then chained that one on a larger hook.

Because if you knit in a tube, and make them extra long, you can tie a fancy knot. These type of garters go back to the days when cut and sewn hose were worn, and garters were tied outside the hose.

In that sittuation, a fancy knot would show outside the hose, and could be quite decorative and attractive- two tails and two loops, two tails and four loops, etc...
