I can't wait...
We're expecting our first accumulation of snow today/tonight up here in Northern New York...it's been a very warm November (50s and 60s Fahrenheit during the days). I'm looking forward to a couple of inches...should make our household move this week a lot of fun!!!
My wife...well I can hear her cursing already.

Sara and I had planned to be in England, with a brief jaunt to Scotland, this week. We would have arrived at Heathrow this morning. In part, I'm glad we postponed.

Very sensible, Sandy - the advice is not to travel unless absolutely necessary, and to plan for the worst.
It is not the snow but the ice which is the real trouble on the roads. We often have the situation where the temperature dips and rises around zero - or 32 in Farenheit, and so sheets of ice form and are absolutely trecherous. The snow ploughs can move the snow, but just polish the ice.
Last winter I used two ski poles with rubber ends on and they must have saved me from falling a dozen times as once the ice forms it is very difficult to get rid of, even when the pavements do eventually get gritted.
The memorable winters of 56 and 69 were of course then followed by the belting summers and droughts of the 70's, with hosepipe bans, trees dying, subsidence on clay soils - but it is not the extremes that matter, Canuck it is the average...

I think it was February 1977when Dorset got hit by a great snowstorm. I was living in Lytchett Matravers then and we had three couples over for dinner Sat night. Light snow got progressively heavier and by midnight when the guests went to leave it was too late. We had them stay over until Tuesday when the roads were finally cleared. Southern England did not know how to deal with snow then.

The UK could try the Canadian solution: spread out megatons of salt, in the form of calcium chloride, to melt the ice. It does wonders for car sales too, becaue they rust away like tin cans in seawater. Well, they've been better lately.
Regarding the extremes thing, I agree! Tell that to the climate boyos who make their more hysterical current predictions only during heat waves. However I've been told that climate discussion is not appropriate for this site, so forget I said that.

UK in big freeze with most snow since '93
"On Saturday, up to 16 inches of snow buried northeast England and Scotland, which the BBC said was the most widespread snow for the date since 1993. Snow also fell across parts of Wales, The Telegraph newspaper reported..."

A matter of time, I'm sure John. At any rate, you & the family stay warm!

My Mrs. is Turkish, mate. No chance of us getting cold when she's about, it's Harry Redders in my house. Costs a flippin' fortune.
