This rings true for all kilts, I have a heavy Knife pleat which I have sat on a train for 8 hours in, not worrying about the pleats in the slightest and it was fine. On the other hand My SWK heavy which is a very light weight kilt, Sit funny for half an hour and the pleats are a mess.

I do not yet have an 8m military box pleat (late January!) but have been told that they are more finicky, and I've seen evidence of this on those I've seen in action, but my 4m Keltoi box pleats are really easy to care for. I wear them at work, where I am in and out of chairs all day, and the only part that seems to show any creasing is at the front, which hangs out overnight if dampened just a bit.

My suspicion is that your kilt maker friend was thinking of an 8 yard military box pleated kilt. These do certainly require a bit more care to keep the pleats neat.
Remember that most traditionally trained kilt makers know nothing of the historic four yard box pleated kilt.
Because so many on this forum own them, talk about them, and are familiar with them, it is easy to get the impression that they are more common place than they are. Really there are only a few specialist kilt makers who offer them, though.

I received a box pleated kilt from Keltoi earlier in December, and I find the pleats on that kilt are much easier to sweep when sitting and look nicer after travelling or sitting than those on my knife pleat (which I picked up around a week ago).
As someone entirely new to kilting, I'd say that from my point of view at least, a box pleat is better proposition for a regular daily wear kilt because of how much lighter and easier it is to deal with.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend John at Keltoi - great prices, excellent quality AND first class customer service (whaddaya reckon about that Ron? Who says you can't have all three?!?!? )
For those who understand, no explanation is necessary; for those who don't, none is possible.
