GET OVER IT! sporrans make that noise, and rather than worry about it (or try to muffle it) toss a few things in the sporran to deaden the sound. After a while you won't notice it. Honest.

Congratulations on your first kilted outing, and I'm very glad to hear that you enjoyed it!
Sounds like you're covered, come to sporran advice and suggestions, so I'll just put another good word in for the Buzz Kidder (Highland Originals) sporrans- they're a LOT of sporran for the money and will certainly last you the rest of your life.

That's probably okay as long as rats and children aren't following you everywhere.

It's the tassels bouncing that make the noise. It's most noticible on hard leather sporrans; not so much so on the soft leather ones, and I can't say I've ever noticed on my fur ones.
The rhythm helps you keep your pace steady. Besides, it's warns the world that a kilted man approaches.

I kind of like the sound mine makes ... it seems like it's keeping time for Scotland the Brave as I'm walking.

Yes go with tasselless sporrans (see my avatar) and you'll not hear that noise.
Actually my rabbit fur sporran with rabbit fur tassels doesn't make that sound either- I guess the fur mutes the sound.
My very first sporran was the typical old-school pigskin Day sporran with three matching braided pigskin tassels and it clacked fairly loudly.
Pipers sometimes have problems with another swinging thing set into motion by walking- the tassel on the end of the bass drone's cord. It can swing a couple feet from side to side when walking and I've seen pipers accidentally knock stuff off tables they're walking past, when carrying their pipes in "pipes down" position. I knocked an old lady in the head with mine when I had my pipes cradled up on my shoulder walking through a crowded building.

Thanks OC...
You made me laugh this morning!
To P33...I recently had the same experience as you. I have a cheaper black daywear sporran with three tassels on the front that I got from Sportkilt with my first kilt. I've worn it several times and have noticed the drumming, but it never really was a concern to me.
Well, on St. Paddy's Day I wore my kilt out to the library where I was working on a final paper for one of my courses. In the quiet atmosphere of the library, the sound of the drumming was REALLY LOUD. I felt the need to hold onto the tassels as I walked, so as not to disturb others who were trying to work. I'm assuming that was somewhat why you were so conscious of it as well in an office environment.
I intend to get myself a black hunting style sporran to replace my current black daywear model at some point...but it will have to make due for now. My preferred daywear sporran is a Robroy styled pouch sporran with a beaver tail flap that I bought from a member on this forum...but it's brown and sometimes my attire just requires black leather.

You could break it up a bit and every so often and skip and hop.
