I feel that one's predisposition towards a monarchy depends very much on one's background. Many of the Americans in the discussion had ties to or prior experience with a monarchy. The narrator/report has Scottish and Canadian parents, which makes him no stranger to the Crown.

However, many Americans have zero experience with living under a monarch, and based on the manner and reasons under which the US was founded there's an inherent distrust. Despite the fact that the Queen seems like a perfectly wonderful lady and a credit to her country, I think most Americans couldn't fathom the idea of the US under a king or queen. It's ... un-American.

There is a lot to be said for having a nonpartisan head of state, and there are even advantages to having such a person appointed for life. The Royal Family is effectively an institution for training people for that role. But behind the notion of a monarchy is the idea that there are people whom a higher power has appointed to rule by reason of birth, and I would hate to see the USA go that way- not that there's much danger. I support the Monarchy because it's a huge part of my history and heritage, and also because I'm that sort of person, but the USA has done OK by going its own way.

Given the discussion, I'll share a memory where I had the chance to touch that point within my own heritage.
I worked in customer service for a local company for many years. One customer who came to me turned out to be the first cousin of the King of Spain, and was the son of the King's older uncle. Had Franco not intervened and named Juan Carlos as King, this young man would have held that position.
The fact that my great-grandparents were born as subjects to his grandfather had a strong resonance and point of connection between us for me, given my strong sense of history as...well, our story.

White, Black, and Rainbow (?) cockades... who will be the next Queen?

Lines seem to be being drawn between the camps: The Shroakians on one side, the Elvisians on the other, and somewhere, streaking across the Australian outback, the Priscillians are gathering a momentum of their own... (Good one Trefor!)

This has all the makings of a Star Wars v. Trekkie brawl.
