UK are overpriced, so I have little to no interest.
On this point I heartily agree....

For that amount of money, I'd want something that was a bit more personalized. I considered a Workman's for a while but considered it a bit of a frivolity.
What will be, will be.

I have a workman's model, and I think it was a pretty good investment. Let's face it: kilts are not cheap. Even a bespoke wool tartan 'tank' could be considered a frivolity by many standards.
That said, I do agree that Utilikilts are overpriced for what they are. They are not custom-made to the customer's measurements. They are off-the-peg. And they are not customizable (the Utilikilt company has a pretty hard-line stance on custom colors, materials, etc.). They aren't made from a high-dollar material, nor do they take a lot of hand-work to build... at least, not compared to a traditional kilt.
But they are rugged and extremely versatile. I use mine for hiking and camping, working outside on my land, and even bumping around town. As far as being a functional garment that doesn't need to be treated like a delicate princess, it's a pretty darn good design. They could probably sell their kilts for much less than they do, but they are a company that intends to make a profit, and I won't begrudge them that. I think they have a good thing going, in a unique market, and I don't mind paying a little more than I think is necessary to support their business model.
Much like beauty being in the eye of the beholder, perceived value is going to differ from person to person. I think the Utilikilt gets a bad rap on this forum from many people because they are not traditional kilts and they are pretty pricy. They also have a certain following and 'brand image' that many don't like. I can understand that. But at the end of the day, they are just people trying to make a living like any other kilt maker, and they will charge what they think the market will bear.

How do they compare to Alt.Kilts, which are custom made?

For comparison with a UK original, I speced an Alt.kilt Classic with a covered single back pocket and 2 permanent cargo pockets, and it listed as 190, regular price.

Yeah, I noticed that too. The Utilikilts I've seen have been really nice kilts, and if I found a Mocker on sale at a show for a good price, I'd grab it. But now not only are they more money than an Alt.kilt, the available colors are off-white, light grey, and pinstripes? Pinstripes? Now where did I put Jeanie's number again..................
Have Fun,

I owned 15 Utilikilts, "outgrew" them and sold all but the leather - which was expandable. Favorites were the brown leather, which I still have, the Survivor II, and the Original in blue denim. Never wanted a tux or spartan nylon thingie or cordoroy. Didn't much like the mockers or the workman's. Have considered a mocha survivor II, but never pulled the trigger on it. A new color in a bad style doesn't get my attention...maybe in a survivor II...maybe....

Don't see much that is new. Not for me. Don't like them.
Colours = UK English spelling. USA = colors

Okay, had time to take a look this morning. Two colors I liked were the sage digital camo and the tan digital camo. Now I gave up on my addiction to camo kilts some time ago - seem a bit much for an olde geezer...but dang - that sage digital camo would look good hiking amid the scrub sage of the rezlands. Just need to figure out how to get them to make the sage digital camo in the Survivor II instead of just the original....and cope with the $330 price tag...
