Konnichiwa!
You'll be okay! What doesn't kill us makes us stronger. <--- Words of encouragement from a land that eats 5.9 quakes for breakfast and belches 'em out later before asking for more!
But no, seriously... If you've never been in one before, it IS freaky. Stay safe everyone, and mind the aftershocks.
Remember: If you're inside, DON'T run outside... If you're outside, stay there and no matter where you are, be careful of falling stuff. Standing in doorframes is a myth -- don't do it; find something sturdy like a desk or table to crawl under, cover yourself, and ride it out. (We do a lot of that around here, lately)... Don't get up to stop the new, 40" LCD TV from falling over. It's painful to watch, but insurance will cover it.

Very rare for that part of the States !! I am happy to hear that there apparently was no serious damage or injuries.
Having lived in Guatemala for the past 8+ years, I have become somewhat accustomed to quakes .... NOT !! I cannot understand how anyone could ! The Earth is not supposed to move !!!!

Rattled
We were rattled in Southern Maryland, but no lasting damage.
Now for the hurricane on Sunday...

That's what has me worried. That could come too close for comfort.

It was really strange for those of us who've never been in one before. This city does not deal well with disasters. It took me four hours to get home - normally about an hour trip. The subway was mobbed and delayed. The commuter trains were delayed while the tracks were being inspected, and then they were mobbed. But, I'm home now. kissed my wife, have had some dinner. played with the dogs. and picked up the stuff knocked onto the floor.

It was an interesting few seconds, but I've been though similar in California, Okinawa, Austria and elsewhere over the years.
The local news has been presenting this quake as second only to the one in Japan, but so far the reports are minimum damage and injuries, and no deaths. For my part I consider this to be much ado about nothing.

Less than 20 miles from the epi center, I did take a quick exit from the building I was in. I had visions of the HVAC in the ceiling coming down.
The real trama was at home. Fiona and our feline kids were in hiding! A few of them needed a little chemical readjustment.
Did the evening shift at the big box store and we were swamped with customers buying food. A number of associates had bailed out at the event and then others didn't show up later. I hate to see a real disaster.

Mael,
My son, at your Alma Mater, was about the same distance away and reported shaking buildings and puzzled looks, otherwise no apparent damage.
My dogs got a little nervous but when I joked with them about it being just a little earthquake they calmed down.
According to the fear mongers on TV and radio, this quake was just the pre-cursor to an even bigger after-shock. And, don't forget that Hurricane Irene is due to strike somewhere in SC/NC over the weekend. I'm sure all of VA will be devestated, especially when combined with the multiple after-shocks that will no doubt come about the same time....we'll probably have snow, too!

Will,
I'm hitting the ABC store, today to stock up for what's to come!
I did have supper at Park Lane between jobs; two bottles of whisky fell during the tremors and one of them broke. The devastation of it all!
