I order all of my Mackie bonnets from Chris at Dunnadd. I specify when I order, that I wish to have my bonnet ribbon tails tied in a nice and neat bow, so I don't have to do it - the experts at Mackie in Scotland can take care of this! Also, with all of my darker coloured bonnets to include black and navy (the only darker colours of the Balmoral bonnet I own), I tend to leave the ribbon tails untied. All of my lighter coloured bonnets, such as lovat blue, lovat green, and fawn, I have the ribbons tied. This is strictly a Macpherson tradition, and simply an example of what most men in the clan, to include myself, do.

Here's a couple pictures showing the Mackie handiwork. I popped a few stitches through the ribbon to hold the knot in place. From the outside, the stitches are nearly invisible due to the crease formed in the ribbon from tying. The knotted threat can be seen from the inside, but who cares about that?

flyrod, you make a good point. If you look at the photo I posted of the green bonnet, you can see how the green thread I put in the middle of the knot is so clearly visible. It wasn't so visible when I put the stitch in, but at that time the thread and the ribbon were the same color. From that, I learned to hide the stitch in the knot.
