Re: The common Scottish view of when a kilt is appropriate.

To be honest I wouldn't like the scenario you set out, but I would be equally unhappy if Scots (who were wearing kilts badly or otherwise) were behaving in a similar manner. I sometimes wonder if Scots who are somewhat traditional about the kilt (like myself) have a bit of a blind spot towards some of the crassness (mooning etc.) around the kilt that some members of the 'Tartan Army' have been reputed to engage in abroad.

How do you feel about the situation? The other group? Yourself? How others are now looking at you?
How would I feel? No different than if I was in a dinner jacket and a bunch of oiks in (probably rented) dinner jackets came in and made asses of themselves.

    I'd just ignore them.

I guess I tend to treat such crass behaviour the same no matter what the perpetrator is wearing - disassociate myself from it - it doesn't reflect on me simply because I may be wearing similar garb. Ultimately I am only responsible for my own behaviour.

I have to say that this is not a situation that I have ever experienced. The closest I can remember was one Hogmanay when most people were dressed in their finery, highlandwear or dinner suits, ladies in ballgowns, and one or two poor individuals turned up in their 'smart casual'. They obviously knew no better and I have to say I just felt a bit sorry for them as they were obviously uncomfortable in their jeans and tee shirts. As to 'foreigners' the only people I can recall were a group of English people up for Hogmanay but they had obviously taken the trouble to hire outfits and were generally well turned out. That is apart from some missing waistcoats with their Prince Charlies.

Re: The common Scottish view of when a kilt is appropriate.

I wore the kilt as a boy in Glasgow up until about the age of 11 or 12 and then it became too expensive for my parents. I must admit that in later years I had little interest in wearing a kilt but when I moved out of Scotland the urge came over me again but cost was still a problem. Having got happily divorced I found I had some extra spending money so I outfitted myself again. I must admit though I only wear it on what I deem special occasions. You do get some looks living in Yorkshire which is cloth cap country.

Re: The common Scottish view of when a kilt is appropriate.

You could expect to see plenty of kilted men out and about in Scotland on a Saturday when there are rugby and soccer matches and weddings being held, or for attending church on a Sunday, less so during the weekdays, I am one of a small minority who wears the kilt almost daily. Since retiring from my profession (I was a lawyer and in my later years in the profession I often wore a black kilt in court) I now do some part-time driving work. I wear black trousers for driving service buses or a kilt for private hire work.
I very rarely wear the full formal outfit with the cap and badge, generally only for highland games or for hosting members of my clan society, as others have said it is bad form to dress such as to draw attention to yourself.

Re: The common Scottish view of when a kilt is appropriate.

I hope that this answer complys with the set criteria!

Black Tie = Prince Charlie Waist coat "Dress" Sporran and Ghillie brogues.

Suit Shirt and Tie or Jacket and Tie = Tweed Jacket, tie, day sporran and brogues.

Casual = Wool pullover shirt, day sporran, brogues

In all cases a kilt, suitable colour plain hose, and appropriat formal/semi formal shirt (usually white or plain matching colour).

In the past week I have worn my kilt casually to lunch and the theatre and to a Royal Scottish Geographical Society lecture and in black tie mode to a big golf orientated dinner.

Same as anytime people are making a fool of themselves. Ignore them. Life's too short to get uptight about the behaviour of people you don't know or want to know, unless their behaviour is impacting directly on you or your ability to enjoy your dinner.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Have you any pictures? I would certainly be interested if you do.
