Dear All,
Thank you all for your help! I can now answer "the question" (which I just did to someone). I hope you all have a good new year.

The brown ground color is indicativce of some Irish tartans . . . It looks like MacKenzie, but I can't say that it is. The broad white implies a dress sett though.
Send a jpeg to the Scottish Tartan's Authority http://www.tartansauthority.com/research and have Brian and those guys look at it.

Dear Mr Greg,
Thank you for your advice. some have guessed it was an Irish tartan as well. Whatever it is I do like it.

It's definitely a trade version of Dress Wheathered MacKenzie. I have three on record, all from the 1950-70 era. This makes 4 (K guards to the R pivot).
The cloth looks to be saxony and the straps are thin so I guess that this is a woman's kilt/kilted shirt or a poorer quality man's kilt that dates to c1970-80.
I agree!

Re: Mystery Tartan
I'll put money on some form of Weathered/Reproduction Dress MacKenzie. Here's the Modern colours. You can see they are virtually identical except for the shades.

I had a kilt maker look at it and he said it is definitely a pretty high quality (pleats and other details hand sewn with good interfacing) man's kilt that had gone through a little. the straps do not look original and I will have to replace them.
Well the debate still seems to be on for the tartan...

You can take figheadair's word to the bank. No doubt that it is Weathered Dress MacKenzie.
