Re: Kilted in the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the US

Karl: My father's family came out of Oglethorpe prison and my mother's family helped burn down Jamestown. How's that for American heritage!?

Great pictures! Thanks for posting them. I particularly like the one of you looking up at the torreon. It does my heart good to see a young man interested in history and Scottish heritage. Keep up the good work (fun?)!

By the way, your "outfit" looks perfect for that relatively hot, humid environment, though at this time of year it is much more tolerable, even cool sometimes. I lived in the Tally to Jax area for 14 years. What tartan are you wearing?

Sounds like a very interesting heritage! Under what circumstances did you ancestors burn Jamestown? I know there was one rebellion against the magistrate there when he had overstepped his bounds (or something like that I do not remember the exact circumstances).

HIStory is my favorite subjects! I do not understand why more young people do not really like history. They really miss out. And Scottish heritage! YES!

I hate the host weather in florida but at this time of year the kilt was a perfect garment, is it not always. And as for the tartan, I had it identified here on x marks, it is a weathered variation of dress Mackenzie.

Again, correct: the burning of Jamestown happened during Bacon's Rebellion in the 1670's; Oglethorpe didn't found the colony of Georgia until the early 1700s.

Aye, Bacon's Rebellion. I think that was the first example of that kind of resistance to tyrants in American and colonial history.

Re: Kilted in the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the US

As a lover of history and a former teacher, I found that too many teachers wanted kids to learn a sequence of facts and dates. When I turned it into stories of sneaky raids, deceit, crafty planning, triumphant responses and heroes and heroines, they absolutely loved it and were willing to learn the timelines that went with it. History is emphatically NOT just a timeline.

Karl: I was referring to colonials burning Jamestown in the late 17th century.

Actually, my mother's family came from Poland. Their transliterated name is Dudziak (pronounced doo-jock or doo-chok depending on how hard one wishes to pronounce the "j" sound). A duda is a pipe and a dudziak is a pipe player, so there must be some Scottish in there somewhere!

I have never seen the Mackenzie Dress tartan before. It makes a nice-looking kilt, especially for outdoors. Is your kilt sewn from Lochcarron's Reiver (lightweight) cloth?

    Dear Mr. John,

do you mean 1700s or 1600s because (according to Cajunscot) Bacon's rebellion happened in the late 17th Century (1670s)? I was just wondering. A Polish piper as well.

I really like the Tartan too although the debate is still on about the tartan...

I had though there was a consensus...

I really do not know what the cloth is (other than wool) as I found it used for a good price and Scottish thrift compelled me to buy it.

    Your Obedient Servant

    Karl

I am still wondering what your Father's ancestors did to fall foul of Oglethorpe...

Well, uh...no. Bacon's Rebellion really wasn't the first shots in the American Revolution, as conventional wisdom and old history texts would have us believe. Yes, Gov. Berkley of Virginia wasn't the most honest civil servant, but Nathaniel Bacon was no George Washington.

Mostly the rebellion centered around the fact that Bacon was upset for not being included in Berkley's circle for kickbacks on frontier fortifications, and Bacon then used the threat of First Nations on the western frontier as a justification for rebellion against Berkley. Virginia at that time contained a fairly large population of landless white males (mostly former indentured servants that had survived) and to be landless was to be nothing in colonial society. Bacon stoked this group by stating that Berkley was denying them frontier lands and that he would drive the Indians from them to allow these folks to settle. The Rebels did burn Jamestown, but Bacon died before anything else could come of it. After Bacon's Rebellion, the gentry turned more to African slaves to work their plantations.

Apologies for the mini-lecture, but it's good practice for next semester.

    Dear Cajun Scot,

No apologies needed. I always like to learn.... but now I will have to study that more as I have not heard about that in depth. But whether or no Bacon was any good it would be hard to beat Mr. Washington.
