    WOW!!!

Are we certain this was a dental procedure and not an "enhanced interrogation"?

They must just do things a little less gingerly in TX.

It's likely the military dentistry thing. I got all four of mine out at Ft. Bragg and what I got was enough Novocaine, or some caine derivative, to bring a rhino to it's knees. One of them was really badly impacted and the doc said "you'll feel some pressure here". What he did was drill a hole in the side of the tooth and then take an "L" shaped tool and used it to break the tooth. Then pulled out the pieces.

Some painkillers and a few days quarters and good as new. I hope you mend up quickly Meghan.

Nope, it was my grandmother's family dentist and I was 16 at the time: TMI is a private JROTC military academy my parents sent me to to keep me from flunking out of high school because I was bored. I hated it so much that I buckled down and graduated a year ahead of my peers just to get out of there.

Sounds about like what I got; I'm just glad I wasn't awake for it! Out of all my time in both the Marines and Army, my worst memory of military medical treatment was as a young Marine getting both of my nether cheeks pumped so full of massive amounts of penicillin that I couldn't sit normally for a week or more. Trust me when I say that acquiring the condition which made the treatment necessary was not enough fun to justify it in the end.

Well, perhaps miracles do still happen. I've been training some 44 years now, the past 28 of which has been in the Bujinkan. Both deliberately and by accident over that time I've been punched in the face, kicked in the face, smashed in the face with a wide variety of weapons so many times I finally figured out I needed to start getting out of the way. It's a wonder I haven't gotten anything broken (a couple of chipped teeth don't count, surely) or lost an eye.

Meghan, bless your heart -- and I mean that in the best way! Do please be careful the next few days, and you should end up just fine.

Re: Got my wisdom teeth removed this morning

I had mine done in the UK by an "old school" dentist. He gave valium to knock you out, and his rule of thumb was to keep giving you valium until your eyes closed... Apparently if you concentrate on just keeping your eyes open you get knocked out for about 2 days...

I have no idea how much he injected, but I was 6'2" and over 200lbs and can definitely remember him starting syringe 3...

My biggest issue was the pulpy mess that the hole became and the tongue just magnetically being drawn to it...

The best way to prevent "dry sockets" and to treat them, if they occur, is to rinse your sockets with warm salt water at least a few times a day. Good luck.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Only use the warm salt water if your dentist/oral surgeon says to; it's a common treatment, but there are some dentist who are starting to say "definitely not".

Basically, just do what after care the doc told you to do. I had mine extracted (straight pulled) about year ago now. I got one dry socket (I smoke), and my doc told me to apply clove oil and switch to clove cigarettes/cigars for a week, and it cleared up pretty quick. (Note, he wasn't saying it was ok to smoke, he was saying since I am GOING to smoke to smoke cloves.)

Of course, my oral surgeon listened to me telling him I'm resistant to topical anesthetics. I got about a quadruple dose of xylocaine per site (He reloaded the oral syringe five times for the whole set of injections). Yeah.... about a hour after the surgery it all hit full efficacy, and I sounded like a drunk Elvis for an few hours.

My wisdom teeth have yet to come in, but I have had 2 root canals with crowns. Does that count?

Around here, Meghan, we'd say, "Bless your heart."

Re: Got my wisdom teeth removed this morning

Had mine out during my first year of college when I was 18. Didn't get the gas, had an IV that sent me off to la-la land. Woke up on my stomach about 45 minutes later with a mouth full of gauze and four less teeth. That was 36 years ago this month.

My oldest son just had his out two years ago during his first year of college. They gave him the gas. That kid was a barrel of laughs for the rest of the afternoon! Every time I said something to him, he would just laugh hysterically and uncontrollably. Kept falling out of the recliner in the living room.

I survived, he survived, and you, too will survive. Just be careful of hot liquids...don't want to be disolving those sutures. (The biggest pain is not being able to brush your teeth...assuming they still prohibit that. After about three days, you'd swear your mouth needs a haircut or a shave.) This too shall pass. Be well!

uuuugh yeah they said after the first 24 hours, im not allowed to brush. I kind of cheated and just brushed my tongue a little when I woke up at 4am. I had my teeth removed at 8am so I figured I'd waited long enough. I wasnt going to be able to fall asleep again if I didnt brush. I cant stand morning breath.
