Re: Really?? Suspenders for Sagging Pants
The police love'em - the perps can't run fast holding up their pants.
I grew out of diapers (nappies?) at 3 and was proud of it.

Re: Really?? Suspenders for Sagging Pants
I don't disagree, this is certainly a trend that I think is foolish. However, what would happen if we altered this just a little bit?
And I'm sure it all started with someone saying "There are no kilt police, wear 'em any way you want" "If YOU like the way they look, that's all that matters"
And it all just went down hill from there...
Now that is starting to look familiar...
I am of the opinion that turnabout is always fair play. If it doesn't work in both directions, it probably doesn't work at all.

Remember the skin tight pants of the 70's...I'd take this look any day (lesser of two evils).

I've never understood the appeal of this look myself - and it gets really silly-looking when you see guys grasping at their knees or lower to retrieve a wallet or keys from their pockets!
I don't know if everyone is aware:
Rumor has it this look started in the jailhouses from the wearers advertising their availability for favors of a 'personal nature'. When these people left the jailhouse, they continued to wear their trousers low out of habit, and the neighborhood kids (trying to gain 'street cred' or look tough themselves, or whatever) took to imitating it.

I've heard that too, but I'm not sure if it's really true or if it's just a way for people to shame others into not wearing their pants like that.
I rather tend to think that the low saggy pants trend was just a youthful backlash against the "grandpa" look of wearing pants up high at the natural waist. Or a typical teen rebellion thing where they intentionally want to look slovenly. I'm not sure why kids want to look slovenly (I even did it when I was a teen, but for the life of me I can't explain today why), but they do.

Re: Really?? Suspenders for Sagging Pants
Most people on this site appear to accept the kilt in any way they want to wear it. Some people insist the kilt should be worn only if you live in the Highlands of Scotland, some like the utility kilt, some like a kilt made from PVC or canvas or denim or leather or almost any material that would hold a pleat. Some insist the kilt should be worn high up around ones wast, some want to wear a kilt at a p&*T belt level. Some want a kilt with tartan only others want to tell everyone that you can not wear any tartan unless you are in the Clan. Some say the kilt should be just above the knee cap, other say that mid knee is fine. Some say wear Gillies only, some say wearing a kilt with hiking boots looks good. Long hose short hose, white hose red hose, the color of the flashes, a belt or belt-less. Pockets in the kilt, matching jackets or waistcoats and on and on.... But most people on this site will say wear the kilt anyway they feel comfortable and you enjoy it.
Come on Guys... you want to criticize a kid who wears his pants hanging around his crotch... Get over it! Fashion with the youth has always driven the fashion of the day. It changes as fast as a sandcastle on a beach.
To my mind wear what you like and if you wear a kilt...lighten up on those that don't. Try to look neat and act like a man. I agree with MacMillan's son 100%.
I am not ranting just xpressing my opinion.

Re: Really?? Suspenders for Sagging Pants
To my understanding there was a singing group of brothers from a lower socio-economic position, meaning that the youngest was wearing the hand-me-downs. His pants were clearly too big for him but it became a fashion. When the fashionistos were put in jail they had their belts removed, leaving them with pants that were too big and no way to hold them up. At first they used the "jail-house belt" (putting the button through a belt-loop then doing up the button) but, because this doesn't always work, they eventually just left the pants hanging low (I've also heard that this was a sign that he is someone's b!#@h and cannot be touched).
Stories...urban legends...I don't really care enough to do the necessary research. Nor do I think I would read the research once it was done.

It seems to me your rant (I mean your expression of opinion) is in direct opposition.

Horrible fashion is a long-standing tradition with the youth, I agree. But it's also a long-standing tradition for adults to criticize them and bemoan their slovenliness. We don't want to mess with tradition, do we? We're just playing our part!
