"Hunting" tartans tend to have more earth tones, something I love (he said thinking lovingly of his Sinclair Hunting) so in that, I would vote for more green. I really love both of your options though!

My preference would be to go with the first option. It's less busy and I think provides a cleaner look to the back of the kilt. Keep in mind that what you see in these images is a quick pre-pin just to get a visual idea of how the options would look. It does not account for any tapering from hips to waist. With the black lines so close to the edge of the wide box pleats, those black lines are going to get thinner as they get closer to the waist. The first pleating option avoids that problem.

Also, it seems that those favoring the second option do so because they like seeing more red. Well, if red was what you were after, it seems to me that you would have gone with the standard Maxwell tartan, rather than the Hunting version. As you did choose the Hunting version, why not accentuate the green?

I'd go with option 1. You already have at least one primarily red kilt, so it might be a refreshing change to be able to wear one that shows more of the green.

I thin they both look great. The question is, do you want more red or more green?

Matt and Tobus have a good point, my Maxwell ancient and modern are both extremely red, so this hunting version will be pleated to the double red stripe on green, which will make it all the greener and will avoid any complications with tapering.

Thank you, gentlemen, for your input!

I like both, but if Matt says #1, that's the way I'd go.

Good to hear that your number is coming up. According to your IM about the queue, mine is only about 3 months away. The Jones is getting stronger.

That looks like a tricky tartan for wide box pleats... If not for the black lines, I'd be all for number two. My main concern with number one is how little the red is represented, but that should be balanced out by the red peeking out directly under the pleat edges.
