I must create a photo-thread of my drinking hat collection sometime... While kilted of course. That would be fun to put together
That would be fantastic... now where did I put my Fez?

I accept no sovereign, but my tastes in wearing the Balmoral are similar to yours. I like the tails a-flyin', even though I'm married, and I do not like the looks of dicing. It reminds me of big-city police hats (New York, Chicago, etc.). And Glengarries just look too military for my tastes. But actually, I go bare-headed most of the time when I'm kilted.
On the rare occasion that I decide to wear a hat with a traditional kilt, it's usually the Balmoral. If it's really hot and I'm feeling humorous, maybe a sun helmet (I'd love a real pith helmet):

When wearing a non-traditional kilt, though, I'll wear any hat. Usually I'm wearing non-traditional kilts for rough outdoor stuff like backpacking or working around my homestead. So a comfortable ballcap works just fine, or even a boonie hat (sorry, I don't have any pics of me wearing that with a kilt):

Please do. And I request you start with the rooskin bush hat. (More curious about the hat than how it looks with a kilt.) Did you get that down under?

That's about the extent of it.
:snicker: Just to see how (if?) I'd make it, I wore my new MacLaren kilt all day yesterday to work, to a going-away luncheon for a coworker, then to the local mall. I got a few "nice kilt" comments, but a greater number of serious "are you performing and where?" questions. (Also got a ribbing from work friends as to me "finally losing it.")
Sadly, many people around here still see the kilt as uniform, or worse, costume. But there are a few of us working on that.

I wear my kilt as an article of clothing, therefore I wear whichever hat seems appropriate for the occasion. The only conscious effort that I make is to not look like a costume. Two weeks ago, at our local highland games, the temperature was over 90F. I wore a panama to protect me from the sun.

Wear what you need to wear - in the sun I wear a hat with a brim, the more the sun the wider the brim.
Seriously - there are a lot of operations being done in the UK to remove ears from people and animals which have developed tumours, farmers are putting up roof on stilts to protect their animals from the sun as the white patches on pigs and cattle are also being burnt to a frazzle.
If you are wearing sunscreen don't forget to put it on and behind the ears - if you are not - you should be.
Wear a traditional hat for a while, if you like, but in the full sun on long hot Summer afternoons something with a full brim is the thing. I have a Tilley hat and a leather one of similar design but narrower - being able to run them under a tap and then wear them to cool the brain is just wonderful.
