I'm guessing he painted it

My alma mater is building a chapel in the near future. Wouldn't a stone carved and painted with Luther's rose look really good over the door?

A handsome piece of stone, WBH. And since it is not fixed to anything, you can take it with you when you move.
[Thinks: must get something like that myself!]

    Painting stone

Masonry paint is what was used during the restoration of the stonework on my home in Ireland.

Years ago, I worked for a gent who could "engrave" anything from brick to stone of different hardness. He could copy the most intricate designs and would "colorize" them to match the original drawing or detail print.

He use to have the contract for the gift stones in Disney and at Texas Stadium? Pretty interesting process.

Padre, that is one beautiful piece of artwork. I will keep that for an idea in the future once we stop moving around.
