I agree that the sett is as simple, but consider that you have to dye the red bits. Theoretically, with the Shepherd, you only need a few black sheep in your flock!

Is it inappropriate to point out that the Scots - including those of us of Scottish descent - have never lacked for black sheep?

I think one of the notable tartans is Campbell (or Black Watch or whichever Clan you care to attribute the tartan too).

Considering my Hamilton ancestors were likely chased out of Scotland o.e step ahead of the hangman...not inapropriate at all. I think the Isle of Skye is pretty notable....Black watch, which you undoubtedly have...Stewart is a striking tartan...and probably one of the most recognizable by a layman. I concur with Xmarks too...a Tartan created for no onther reason than tartan itself drew us all together. Congregated by plaid...grooovy!

Here are a couple categories which in my opinion make the tartans notable
-tartans which can be shown to predate the proscription
-tartans which can be shown to predate 1822
A table display in two sections showing tartans from these categories would be pretty cool, and informative.
A fairly clear distinction would probably be visually obvious between the genuine old tartans and the post-Allen Brothers "tartan as heraldry" tartans.

I agree that verifiably OLD tartans are cool. Aside from the previously mentioned Culloden, and Black Watch, the only very old one that I am aware of is MacDonald of Kingsburgh.
What others would you suggest?

We've been around this buoy before. Pre-Culloden - yes; then I'd opt for pre-1800 which would cut out a whole load of setts designed by Wilsons to meet the insatiable tartan need pre-1822.

Campbell (Red - John of the Bank)
Campbell (Red - Lochlane)
Glenorchy
Lennox - allegedly
MacColl
MacDonald of Glenaladale
MacDonald of the Isles (Red)
MacDonald of the Isles (Green/Htg)
MacDougall - probably
Murray of Tullibardine
Murray of Ochtertyre
Prince Charles Edward
Countless unnamed patterns
