For those who might need a visual, this is what Scott (MoR) has proposed.

A picture is worth a thousand words to me in this field, thank you Ken. Cheers

Thanks Kenneth! I was trying to figure out how to draw it in MS Paint. That is a royal PITA! The only other drawing tool I have is PowerPoint, and that's even tougher to work with, especially using a thumb rollerball for a mouse pointer.
Would you be willing to draw the chief engrailed? (And maybe do a version with the bordure engrailed as well?)

I knew I was getting ahead of myself. I'll work on the engrailed bordure a little later when I have more than a few seconds.

Below is what I was originally envisioning as the grant for my 5g-gf. Please forgive the crude graphics. As I mentioned earlier, the only "drawing" tools I have are Paint and PowerPoint.

I got the rifle image from the US Army Combat Infantryman's Badge, reversed the image, then colored it to make it proper.
Now that I can see Scott's (MoR's) suggestions graphically (thanks again Kenneth!), I think his ideas make things simpler.
I'd still like to include something to tie the arms to Kentucky, but I can discuss that possibility with whichever granting authority I wind up going to for a grant/advice. I could make that connection in the crest and/or motto, but since those may be changed in the future, I'd like to see the connection more permanent, as part of the shield.
Thanks very much for everyone's input!
John

John, here is a rough job of the engrailed bordure version.

As to what you have above, it isn't a bad start, but it is best to have at least two differences from the original. The blue chief with the rifle can really only be seen as one, but there are some pretty simple things to do to add more differences (like engrailing the sides of the bend). The tricky part is trying to find what other arms there are out there that may have done something similar.

Any chance you're related to Charles Scott (Governor of Kentucky, 1808-1812)?

Taking your idea, John, and foregoing the chief, you could simply change the lines of the bend to bretesse which would mimic somewhat the footprint of the early frontier forts in Kentucky and add behind it in bend-sinister a Kentucky longrifle Gules. Add necessary cadency, if desired, from there.
