Hi Ep, just wanted to throw my 2 cents in here. Let me say, that it's my opinion that the "comments" were from guys that are less confident than you are, and probably spurred on by their jealousy of your "pluck" (man and a half status) to wear something that looks great, and has THEIR women talking about some one other than THEM.

To me the "comments" by these guys are just like the insecure dog barking at the lead dog. I live in the Tulsa area and find that while I may be getting a few grumbles now and then from a guy or two, it's normally sparked by the fact that the lady they're with can't stop looking, and smiling at me. LOL....LOL... And I know it has to be the kilt, because I 'm not that good looking....LOL... I also find it interesting that in the state that you live in, a whole lot of people are of Scottish origin.

Just this last Saturday I went to a performance at the Tulsa performing arts center, (it was a big deal) and took the opportunity to wear my new wool kilt. It turned out to be a typical afternoon out Kilting, and here's what I mean by "typical".

As I walked into the venue, I noticed that many of the men were busy looking the other way while their "dates" were busy smiling at me...LOL...These guys reminded me of "little" dogs that couldn't look the BIG dog in the eye....It was (and always is) a HOOT. Mean while I certainly enjoyed smiling back, and nodding at the admirers as they smiled and blushed a little as I caught (acknowledged) them "watching". It was also interesting to see how many people were interested in (or seemed to be interested in) eves dropping as I responded to questions about my kilt, and kilt wearing.

So.....rock on, and remember that when you wear a kilt your the lead dog, and (in my opinion) adding to the diversity of humanity, and letting every one know (by your appearance) that YOU'RE your own man.... Stan L.

Did get several good comments, one female ask "the question" and three fellows said "I should be wearing mine". One young military man said he would be wearing his if he weren't on duty.

Now that event is about as "southern" (read redneck) as you can get and if I can get away being kilted with a sleeveless shirt and sandals in a crowd of approxamately 70,000 folks there I can go anywhere. As for pictures, if I could ever figure out how to post them I would certainly do so. Not been successful yet.

Larry, I plan to wear mine to the Indianapolis MotoGP at Indy in August. I always wear a doctors coat as I support "The Doctor" (Valentino Rossi) so I will have to see how the two go together (and they may not). Pretty sure I'll be the only kilted one there but maybe not next year when other guys see it can be done.

Ep, good on you for not being discouraged.

That and as some have mentioned, pulling the kilt up a bit. Welcome to the rabble!

I won't presume to know why anybody made tactless comments to you, or wolf-whistles or anything else. It's quite common here on X Marks to assume that those who do such things are either stupid, jealous, or insecure. After a number of years of buying into that pseudo-logic, I've decided that it's probably bunk. I figure, if someone makes a rude comment or whistles, then that's his or her problem, not my problem. Whatever. If I want to wear a kilt, I'll wear a kilt, and the rest of the folks can deal with it, or ignore me.

Now there ARE cases where the person is SO obnoxious that an answer is required. When someone is that obnoxious, to my mind, witty retorts are pretty useless. I usually show them my middle finger, or on the *extremely* rare occasion when it seems that more is appropriate, I'll get verbal about it. However, honestly, we're talking about 4-5 interactions in seven years of active kilt-wearing. Compare that to the literally thousands of positive interactions I've had. piffle.

Just carry on. If you want to wear a kilt, then wear a kilt.

Congrats on the first day!! Once you've done this a few times your confidence increases ten fold. As for the stares and giggles, brush then off and hold your head high. Besides, like mentioned previously, some of the looks and giggles might have been positive. Hang in there!!

It is my impression from everywhere where I have been wearing my kilts that people are extremely tolerant. I do not hear wolf whistles, laughter, giggling or bad comments. I do get some double takes which, I think, is understandable. A kilt in Denmark is a very, very rare thing. Most people have never before seen one “live”, only on pictures or in movies.
I do, however, get positive comments (I also consider questions about what I wear beneath my kilt positive remarks).

Do I limit my kilt wearing to “safe” places?
I myself happen to live in a very nice area and there it is, no wonder, easy to wear a kilt.
But I have also several times been walking through, say rather problematic neighborhoods, including today, with a high rate of criminality (including shooting in the streets by night), and young unemployed immigrants hanging around in groups. The same: No bad comments, no whistles; no nothing.

Last week when walking along a nearby lake I suddenly found myself amidst a high school class on an outing - 20-25 17-18 years old girls and boys. I had expected some comments but no, just a couple of stares where after they went on with their own business.

And my experiences are not limited to Denmark. Everywhere I have felt secure. And that, I think, is the secret. The more you wear your kilt the more secure or confident you’ll feel. And THAT will bring an end to the wolf whistles etc.

Therefore: Keep on, just do it.

    Ep, Moogi and all,

We kilted folks certainly seem to "stir the pot" even when we don't intend to. But it's fun.
